When my daughter, Nicole, was pregnant she did a TON of research on everything that she wanted for her baby. There is so much out there and she just wanted to be sure. She looked at car seats, read the reviews, and made sure she picked the one with the best crash ratings.
She did the exact same with diapers. Now, when I was pregnant we had 2 choices…cloth or disposable. And the disposable brands were pretty much Huggies and Pampers. That was it.
I had NO idea what they used to make the diapers and I gave NO thought to the landfill and how many diapers ended up there each year. (According to PrNewsWire 20 billion diapers contributing to 3.5 million tons of waste).
For Nicole the choices were many and they seemed endless. We talked a lot on the phone about all of the options:
Whew…a lot, right? One of the parameters of her decision was cost. Since she and her husband are BIG TIME budgeters they did not have the cash to lay out for many of the options.
She ended up choosing the sustainable and disposable diapers from Dyper.com. When her first box of diapers arrived she showed them to me. #1 – There seemed to me a million of them. haha. #2 – They are so soft!
The grandma in me wanted to find out why she chose Dyper.com. This is what I found out:
Wow. Such great stuff, right?
Did you know that most major diaper brands do not have to disclose what chemicals they use in their diapers? Those same diapers that are on your baby 24/7 for 2-3 years?
Did you know that most major brands of diapers use chlorine bleach to make their diapers white? Why? Because for some reason we think white means clean. I found this:
Chemicals in conventional, disposable diapers include: Volatile organic compounds (VOC's) including toluene, ethylbenzene, xylele and dipentene. Sodium polyacrylate (SAP), dioxins, polyurethane, adhesives, lotions, fragrances and pesticide residue.
And we wonder why their poor little bums get diaper rash?!
Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic and ideal for sensitive skin. The fibers in bamboo are organically smooth and round without chemical treatment, meaning no harsh chemicals to irritate the skin. It is ultra soft & silky to the touch, while also strong & absorbent.
I am so happy that Nicole did the research and found what works for her. We both have been working towards living a chemical free lifestyle. From our cleaning products to our skin care. We both are trying to create environments that are safer for ourselves and the ones that we love most.
I thought I would share this diaper journey with you. In case you want to DUMP. THE. TOXINS. too.
BTW – If you would like to know what skin care I LOVE…well, call me fickle. I love love 2 companies. Primally Pure and True Botanicals. Check them both out. I have a whole page on why I love Primally Pure. You can save 10% with the code: PJ10.
As for cleaning supplies. HANDS DOWN I love Branch Basics. One product creates many. NO toxins and it works great too!
