I am not a fan of hand sanitizer. There. I said it.
I think it dries out my hands too much plus I prefer to just wash my hands with soap and water. As a result, I have NO hand sanitizer in the house.
With the onset of the Coronavirus I have become a germaphobe. I am staying at home as much as I can and wearing my mask when I go out (it reminds me to not touch my nose). But now, when I do go out, I feel like I need to use hand sanitizer every minute. You too?
Since everyone is totally sold out of hand sanitizer I thought I would make my own.
I happened to have 91% and 99% alcohol because I use it for card making backgrounds. I also had Aloe Vera in my sunscreen drawer. I guess it pays to hold onto things! Right?
One thing I just learned: Hand sanitizer is only effective if it is at least 60% alcohol. Adding the Aloe Vera dilutes that percentage. So, make sure your ratios keep it at 60% alcohol or higher.
This is what I did:
2/3 cup 91% alcohol
1/3 cup aloe vera
5 drops lavender essential oil (any scent will work)
Whisk together in a bowl
Pour (I used a little funnel) into little bottles or in a container. Shake it up. It thickens as it sits.
I did not have any little bottles so I found some body creams from a hotel, emptied them and washed them. Worked great!
I put the extra in a glass storage container. Mine is a little on the liquid side – thats ok with me.
I hope this helps.
Stay healthy and wash your hands PLUS use your hand sanitizer!
