I have started cross stitching after a 30 year hiatus. And, it has been so much fun. Fabrics have changed (I now stitch on linen). Threads are hand-dyed and oh so yummy. Hoops are more streamlined. It has been so much fun finding all of the new stuff!
I am finding that as I get older by life gets busier. And the way that unwind (or should I say unplug) is hiding in my craft room watching Rom Com's on Hallmark and cross stitching. Rather than dragging out all of my supplies I only need a few things.Because I don't need very many supplies, my desk stays relatively uncluttered. And rather than being the creator…I am only a follower. Which gives me an opportunity to turn my brain off and relax in the soothing movements of ‘needle in..needle out'.
This month Nichol Spohr has a Cross-Stitch SAL (Stitch-A-Long) that I am trying to keep up with. We are making a Biscornu (stay tuned) not a pillow. She has YouTube videos on how to get started and she will show us how to finish it too. I did have to buy a few supplies that I am not used to. Like Ground Walnut Shells!
Here is my progress so far –

I have to finish the design, add a back stitch border and then do the underneath side.
In order to stitch properly I invested in a wonderful (portable and rechargeable) magnifying light (It is on sale right now at 36% OFF!!). I also bought a 5 pack of magnifying glasses (because I lose them all the time).

With both of these items I can find the holes easily so I tend to rip out less (notice I said less :).
I also love stitching in a Nurge hoop. I have a bunch of different sizes too. These are totally different than the wooden hoops of my youth.

If you need some downtime in your life I highly suggest crafting. Any type. There is a minimal investment in cross stitching. And, there are tons of videos that can help you get started.
I am totally loving my mornings in my room while drink my tea…and stitch. I have watched so many Hallmark rom-coms it is crazy! Nothing like a little mindless activity!
