Need a Non-toxic Moisturizer? How to Choose: Body Oil vs. Body Butter

It’s not just your face that depends on moisture to retain healthy, radiant skin. The skin on your body relies on moisture just as much! But we find that an organic moisturizer for the body is a topic often overlooked in the beauty industry. Not to mention the struggle of finding a non-toxic moisturizer that checks all your boxes.  → Should you go for a lotion? A whipped lotion? A body oil? A body butter? What's the difference?  Well, for starters, we understand ingredients can get confusing. Aka, which to avoid and which are best for your skin. Plus, when’s best to apply a non-toxic moisturizer – first thing in the morning or before bed?  Moisturizing can quickly become a complicated subject.  That’s why we’re here to help. ;) We’re going to walk you through the differences + all the things to consider when deciding between our two non-toxic moisturizers. When choosing a non-toxic and organic moisturizer, we want you to have customized options. Body Oil vs. Body Butter Nothing is wrong with lotion, but we prefer to keep it simple and choose between body oil vs. body butter. In our experience, these are the two most effective ways to bring supple moisture to your skin.  That’s why these two non-toxic moisturizers are our top choices for full-body hydration. How Body Oil Works as a Non-toxic Moisturizer Consistency Yes, body oil is made of oils, as the name would imply. But it’s not greasy. Especially when applied on damp skin, this non-toxic moisturizer soaks in effortlessly.  We created PP’s Body Oil to resemble the oils in your skin so it’s absorbed easily. No need to stress about oils staining your clothing or the feeling of greasy skin. (Not ideal.) Content Usually, body oil is made up of carrier oils (base oils) and sometimes combined with fragrance or other filler oils. At Primally Pure, this organic moisturizer only contains the highest quality oils – that are good for your skin and your overall health.  On top of that, it’s fortified with a blend of organic and wildcrafted essential oils with specific healing + aromatherapy properties. We handpick all ingredients for their properties to repair parched skin, calm inflammation, and provide a punch of antioxidants.  Our body oils contain the following carrier oils: Fractionated Coconut Oil Kukui Nut Oil Organic Sweet Almond Oil Organic Argan Oil Organic Tamanu Oil Moisture Level Generally, body oil provides light to medium moisture. Surprised? While it absorbs easily, oil is actually a lighter form of moisture when comparing body oil vs. body butter. The light consistency of this organic moisturizer makes it perfect for hydration maintenance. Use it daily as part of your routine to retain moisturized skin. Body oils leave your skin looking luminous. Application Body oil is best applied on damp skin. Water and oil work synergistically to dramatically change hydration levels. Damp skin absorbs and transports nutrients into your skin more easily to lock in hydration, just like a facial mist before applying serum. Generously apply this non-toxic moisturizer all over damp skin + let it sink in.  → Option #1: Apply your body oil after the shower (no need to towel off!).  → Option #2: If you’re not showering, generously spritz yourself with Everything Spray first to boost absorption. (Applying this mist after shaving will also prevent ingrown hairs!) → Tip: This non-toxic moisturizer sinks in quickly. You’ll be surprised at how easily it glides on. No rubbing is required – unless you want to stimulate your lymphatic system. If body oil doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, or you need a more potent organic moisturizer, body butter might be the answer for you.  Body Butter as Your Non-toxic Moisturizer of Choice If you’re looking for a more luscious or deeper moisture level, body butter might be best. We love this non-toxic moisturizer option over a traditional lotion because it contains more bioavailable ingredients that are easily recognized + absorbed by your skin. Consistency  The consistency is very different in body oil vs. body butter. It’s the most occlusive option when choosing a non-toxic moisturizer. This means it’s thicker and creates a more occlusive protective barrier. Content  Most body butters are full of nourishing and moisture-rich oils + a creamy, luscious coverage to protect and lock moisture into your skin barrier.  At Primally Pure, our formula for this organic moisturizer contains some of the most nutrient-dense ingredients available – from botanical and animal-based sources. Each is packed with rich antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and critical vitamins for healthy skin.  You’ll find ingredients like: Tallow from grass-fed cows Organic mango butter Organic shea butter Organic extra virgin coconut oil  Sweet almond oil Organic extra virgin olive oil Organic + wildcrafted essential oils Moisture Level  This is your organic moisturizer if you’re looking for medium to deep moisture. It’s best for restoring skin hydration, repairing damage from the sun or free radicals, and soothing inflammation. If your skin is especially dry, this non-toxic moisturizer will absorb into your skin and provide an extra “layer” of protection to seal it all in. Application Body butter works best on damp skin (like after a shower or bath). Similar to body oil, the water content helps the oils absorb + spread easier over your skin’s surface. When applied overnight, the nutrients can work with your body’s natural “repair mode” during sleep. → Tip: Avoid getting water into the jar – it could cause bacteria growth. → Storage Tip: This organic moisturizer may melt when exposed to extreme heat. If it does, pop it in the fridge to restore its original texture. Now that we’ve gone over the best conditions for using body butter as your non-toxic moisturizer, it’s time to take it a step further. Let’s compare body oil vs. body butter directly. Comparing Body Oil vs. Body Butter Truthfully, there’s no “better” answer. It all depends on what your body is asking for – which can change throughout the years. We actually love alternating both based on our ever-evolving skin needs! So here’s how to know which non-toxic moisturizer you need depending on your body’s cues. If you’re looking for:  A lighter, more routine non-toxic moisturizer, you may prefer a body oil. Some serious TLC for dry, cracked, or damaged skin, body butter will do the trick.  Here’s another thought: you could layer both for an intense moisture boost.  Think of it like skin layering serum + cream on the face. Your routine could look like:  Step1: Shower (or apply Everything Spray).  Step 2: Apply Body Oil.  Step 3: Then apply Body Butter to seal it all in. It comes down to your preference for feel, application, and moisture level your skin needs at the time! Our recommendation? Keep both non-toxic moisturizers on hand so you can choose on demand. ;) Criteria to Consider When Choosing a Non-toxic Moisturizer Beyond choosing body oil vs. body butter, it’s essential to understand what’s in your non-toxic moisturizer + how it’s made. You want to feel confident you’re providing clean + nourishing moisture to your skin – not harmful chemicals or toxins. A clean, organic moisturizer is key – always do your research. To save you some time, these standards are non-negotiables in our book for a non-toxic moisturizer.  High-quality Carrier Oil/Base A non-toxic moisturizer – whether body oil, body butter, or lotion – should contain oils that have been ethically + responsibly sourced. And it’s not just for sustainability reasons. By default, ethical ingredients are usually also clean + free from unnecessary additives. You’ll also want to make sure the ingredients are all organic or at least mostly organic. And it may take some extra research, but you want to be sure the oils you’re applying to your skin have not been chemically altered during purification or processing. Always opt for cold-pressed and non-chemically-filtered (or processed) oils in your non-toxic moisturizer. Lastly, you want to choose an organic moisturizer with non-comedogenic ingredients. This means they won’t clog your pores. This is typically more of an issue with the face, but better safe than sorry. (Speaking of – coconut oil gets a bad rep for being pore-clogging. But fractionated coconut oil is perfectly fine for your face + body and coconut oil found in soaps.) No “Fragrance” or “Parfum” Listed in the Ingredients Scents are one of the most powerful forms of nostalgia. So if you’re itching for a scent that takes you back to memories of the beach, a trip to Greece, or gentle summers spent outside, you’re not alone.  But “Fragrance” (also labeled as “parfum”) is a classic greenwashing marketing term used to hide chemicals + toxins in products. The FDA doesn’t require companies to disclose what’s in their “fragrance” because it’s considered proprietary info.  This means fragrance is potentially one of the most dangerous ingredients in conventional moisturizing products. But you can still have a wonderfully aromatic moisturizer – just be sure that the label clearly states the origin of the scents. The easiest way to do so is by choosing products only scented with essential oils. Avoid Toxins + Irritants We talk about which ingredients to avoid in skincare all the time – and that includes what you put on your body. But here’s a refresher on what to avoid if you’re looking for a non-toxic moisturizer:  Alcohols that dry the skin out (ironic to have these in a moisturizing product, right?). Preservatives and fillers – like parabens, sulfates, and silicones that strip and provide your skin and the formula zero value. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can cause hormonal imbalances. Phthalates that make fragrance “stick on your skin” but are actually chemical plasticizers known to cause birth defects, respiratory issues, and infertility – no thanks.  Tip: Check out this full list of ingredients to avoid in moisturizing products. Stick these criteria in your back pocket – or just shop our non-toxic moisturizer options and know you’re making a clean choice. ;) Other Ways to Support Hydrated Skin  While applying topical moisture is definitely important, hydration isn’t just skin deep. Hydration and the moisture that follows are dependent on your lifestyle choices too.  Here are a few quick tips for maintaining hydrated, supple, and youthful skin – from head to toe. Dry brush regularly – removes dead cells (aka dry skin) and stimulates cell turnover for supple, soft skin. It also helps your non-toxic moisturizer absorb more deeply into the skin. Sweat More – believe it or not, sweat actually lubricates/moisturizes the skin. Internal hydration – don’t underestimate the power of hydration to soften skin and retain moisture. Gel water is an excellent addition to your diet to hydrate more effectively. Moisturizing baths – we’ve created a special Epsom salt blend containing coconut milk for a decadent, moisturizing bath – any time you’d like.  Avoid caffeine and alcohol – these cause the skin to dry out and counteract hydration in your body. Avoid sugars – especially processed sugars that can cause glycation, aka premature aging (which is essentially dry skin).  If any of these tips sound familiar, that’s because they are. Taking care of the skin all over your body includes many of the same basic principles for taking care of + hydrating (and healing!) the face. Hydration isn’t only about using a non-toxic moisturizer – though that doesn’t hurt. ;) Non-toxic Moisturizer: Which Will You Choose?  Now that you’ve learned the difference, it’s easy to see why there’s no one-size-fits-all when choosing a non-toxic moisturizer. But that’s a good thing! And lucky for you, we’ve got a variety of non-toxic moisturizers to fit your preferences + specific skin needs. Soak in the deep, restorative moisture from body butter after time in the sun or while experiencing a particularly stubborn dry spell with your skin. Or your body oil could be the perfect lightweight consistency for a quick pick-me-up in the mornings before starting your day.  No matter your skin’s hydration needs, now you know how to choose the best non-toxic moisturizer for your skin + support hydrated skin that lasts.  Hydration is where it’s at, babe.  Healthy skin = hydrated and moisturized skin. How Blue Yarrow Body Oil Helped This Seaside Blogger's Skin Glow

Body oil, a luxurious liquid to hydrate, heal, and nourish the skin. This lovely bottle of goodness has had me floating on air the last few weeks. My skin is glowing and prepared to enjoy a long golden summer. My journey with oils did not begin well. I loved the idea of using pure raw coconut or olive oil on my skin, but every time I did the oil would simply not absorb. It would sit on top and make me feel slippery and well… oily all day long! It stained my clothes and sheets and basically was an incredibly messy experience, one I do not wish to repeat. I came away feeling discouraged, wondering how all my fellow clean beauty friends were making it work. Perhaps my skin just couldn’t handle oils? That must be it, I told myself. Leaving oils behind, I found and tried many different body butters. They absorbed, but it was hard to find a short simple clean ingredient list. I began realizing that I needed ingredients that could maintain hydration long-term—change the texture and health of my skin, not just cover it. Meanwhile, I kept longing for the simplicity of body oils and wishing I could use them. One day I happened upon a discussion over the differences between virgin unrefined coconut oil and fractionated coconut oil. It was incredibly enlightening! To put it simply, the varied fatty chains in virgin coconut oil prevent easy skin absorption. There are the blessed few that can absorb it, but most skin types struggle. I, obviously, fit in the struggling category. Fractionated coconut oil, on the other hand, is created by removing a few of the chains so that only saturated fats remain (medium-chain triglyceride) and though I’m not usually a proponent of heated or altered ingredients, this allows for quick and full absorption. I still encourage you to seek the highest possible quality—at the very least find organically grown. This news changed my perspective and gave me hope! At the same time, I landed on Primally Pure’s lovely online shop, hoping to try out their deodorant (review coming next!). I saw that they carried body oils as well and started perusing the ingredient list. Number one on the list—fractionated organic coconut oil. My heart leaped and I began reading up on the other ingredients. They checked out! From there it was determining which of the beautiful oils to try first. The color of the blue bottle caught my eye, then I saw the main ingredient and knew this was the oil I wanted. Blue yarrow. This incredible plant has been used for centuries to heal numerous conditions, from war wounds, joint stiffness, and eczema to simple cuts and bruises. It also holds many other benefits as well, but we’re focusing on skin today. The other essential oils included were soothing and calming lavender and restoring and revitalizing geranium. Pair these with the rich, plumping, and hydrating oils and you have skin heaven in a bottle. Needless to say, I was sold. Fast forward a month and a half and I am finishing up my second bottle. I know. I’m that obsessed. Believe me it’s with good reason! My skin has never been so calm. I tend to have very very sensitive and dry skin—symptoms of two health conditions I live with daily, Hypothyroidism and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)—so it can become easily irritated and uncomfortable. I’m thrilled to be sharing this product with you today and hope that it brings as much healing and joy to your life as it has mine. Below you will find information on the company behind the oil as well as my personal experience with it. Enjoy! Primally Pure The story behind this small local company is an inspiring one. It actually started with a family’s decision to eat real clean food and start a farm called Primal Pastures. If you’re in the Western portion of the States, I highly recommend perusing their site and even scheduling a farm visit. You’ll be impressed. Back to skincare, one of the family members, a sweet gal named Bethany, wished to clean up her skincare in partnership with her new nourishing diet. Finding little that met her standards, she began to concoct her own products with simple high-quality ingredients. It wasn’t long before she was convinced to sell them on the family farm’s online shop. The raving reviews flowed in and began to build the foundation that made the current company possible. Over the last year or so, she’s gathered a dedicated team around her to expand availability and product options. I could go on for a while about the level of quality in each of Primally Pure’s products, but I’ll save that for each individual review. Basically, they most definitely meet my requirements for nourishing and restorative skincare. For those of you that are new to Merfleur, I define high-quality ingredients as: fresh, non-gmo, natural or raw ingredients, wild or organically grown, created with low-heat, and, hopefully, locally or indigenously sourced. Primally Pure came to my attention through the farm Primal Pastures, but it wasn’t until this year that I decided to invest and give the line a try. I now have quite a few of Bethany’s gorgeous and life-giving concoctions in my possession. As I’ve shared on my Instagram stories, I’ll be continuing to try and test them over the next few months. I plan to only share those that work well for me, so I definitely encourage you to peruse Primally Pure’s shop in case there is something I am not reviewing that may be in line with your personal skin needs. Since Primally Pure’s sourcing and combining of ingredients is so trustworthy, it’s really a matter of effectiveness and personal preference at this point. Product + Primally Pure’s Blue Yarrow Body Oil Experience In the first 2 weeks, my skin needed ALOT of the oil. Hence the 2ish bottles in a month and a half! My skin was transitioning… rebalancing from it’s dehydrated state. Absorbing the oil became easier and quicker for my skin with each day. I can happily say the stagnant oiliness I had experienced with the raw oils did not occur. I have been known to breakout in hives or random bouts of itchiness and neither have taken place. In fact, I think Primally Pure’s body oil has reduced my sensitivity overall. The combination of ingredients in this body oil work to soften and soothe my skin into a place of sweet peace. The aroma. It’s perfectly lovely. I could smell the open bottle all day long, which is odd because I am normally hyper-sensitive and don’t enjoy strong scents that linger too long. The Blue Yarrow body oil provides just the right amount of aroma during application to relax your mind and body. Within 30 minutes, it has soaked in perfectly and left a neutral clean smell on the skin. Uses & How-To + Body Moisturizer 1 pump into palms, rub hands together, and gently massage into one area of the body with light circular motions, continue this method with the rest of your body. Don’t forget to give your cuticles, elbows, and heels some love. Apply post-shower for deepest absorption and/or first thing in the morning, prior to getting dressed. I do both 🙂 + Skin Healer Apply morning and night, spending a little extra time gently massaging more oil into the injured or systemically irritated areas. I recommend wearing cotton clothing after application to allow for breathability as well. + Hair Hydrator Pre or post-shower, after moisturizing your body, lightly run your fingers through lower half of locks, focusing on your ends. You do not need much, simply use what was left over on your hands after covering your body. For a restorative hair mask, use 1/2 to 1 full pump and massage into scalp and locks, tie up in a bun and sleep on it overnight. Shower first thing in the morning. Rosy to Golden Lastly, I have to share a recent experience that made the healing power of this oil very real for me. It started with a weekend camping trip along the coast with friends. My very “light” skin and I had not spent much uncovered time in the sun of late and I was a little nervous about burning. I lathered my body with a new non-nano zinc sunscreen I had been waiting to try (I’m on a new venture to find a safe clean non-nano sunscreen that actually works and doesn’t make you look like a ghost) and spent the day hoping it was doing its job. Well…. evening came and let’s just say my legs no longer looked “white” but had changed hues to a not so lovely rosy red. Yep. My efforts had proven ineffective, at least on the legs, and I was pretty disappointed. Enter my healing blue liquid gold. I went home that night and covered my body in the oil, hoping it might help, but planning to be uncomfortable for a while. Friends, I cannot express how impressed I was with the results! Within a day, yes, one day, my skin was on the mend. By day two, I was golden. My skin remained healthy and happy from that day forward. I’m a huge fan of pure aloe vera, buuuut I may not need it quite as much with this gorgeous rescuer! Story’s conclusion… this oil is beyond a moisturizer, it’s a proven healer. I’m an absolute believer.   xoxo   À votre santé!   For even more PP reviews, plus mindful + seaside living inspiration, take a look at Jessi’s little space over at https://www.merfleur.com.

Oil Cleansing Doesn’t Have to Be Overwhelming – Let’s Break It Down!

Oil cleansing is a unique, yet powerful way to deep clean your skin – without stripping it. If you’ve recently jumped on the oil cleansing train, are in the transition phase, or you’re considering it but want some more information, you’re in the right place.  Oil cleansing can feel confusing and counterintuitive, so it's common to have questions. But don’t worry – there are plenty of answers here when it comes to how, why, and when to use the oil cleansing method.  We love this effective + gentle form of cleansing for all skin types. Aside from a deeper cleanse, oil cleansing lessens irritations and helps your skin naturally strengthen and heal.  Our favorite part is that it works for every skin state. After doing a poll on your most pressing oil cleansing questions, we’ve compiled this guide to help you reap the benefits of oil cleansing. Note: before you dive into these questions, if you're not familiar with the oil cleansing basics start with these resources: How to Oil Cleanse Oil Cleansing Myths + The Truth Behind This Beauty Trend Oil Cleansing Mistakes You Might Be Making We’re here to support you in your skincare journey. So whether you’ve got technical questions, skin-specific questions, or just want some more guidance on correct usage – read on.  Technical Questions About Oil Cleansing Sometimes you just need some clarity for technical purposes right? After all, you want to be doing things the correct way, and sometimes details get fuzzy. FAQ: How do I know which cleansing oil is best for my skin?  Answer: Don’t overthink it! → If you have oil-rich or acne-prone skin, try the oily formula.→ If you have dry or mature skin, try the dry formula.→ If you have combination or balanced skin, the normal formula is probably best. Our skin state blog will give you a more detailed overview to discover your skin state, including other components you should add to your routine! FAQ: Which cleansing oil should I use if I have dry skin and stubborn breakouts?  Answer: Since it sounds like a combination of issues, we suggest using our normal formula. It helps tackle dryness while regulating oil production + dissolving impurities.  Other products like our skin-specific serums and moisturizers can be paired with your cleansing oil for even better results! Tip: Take our newly-revamped skin quiz to get your personalized recommendations. FAQ: I’m feeling overwhelmed by the oil cleansing method, how do I do it?  Answer: No worries, we’ve got you. It can be overwhelming to start something so drastically different than what you’re used to! Here’s a play-by-play: Start with a dry face (you can leave your makeup on). Take 1-2 min to massage the cleansing oil in gently but with mindful pressure – focus on areas of the skin where you experience issues most often (for many it’s the nose or chin). Work out the tension on the jawline and forehead – this doubles to relieve emotional stress too. Use light downward strokes on the neck to stimulate lymphatic drainage. Press a clean, warm (not hot!), and wet washcloth against your face until it cools. Then sweep it across your face, and repeat as needed until all the oil is removed. Tip: If you’re a visual person, check out our video tutorial or our quick oil cleansing reel. FAQ: How do I do a double cleanse? Answer: A double cleanse pairs an oil cleanse with an additional cleansing step. You’ll use all the same steps for oil cleansing but follow it up with a water-based or glycerin-based cleansing bar. This gives you a gentle, non-abrasive cleanse that further clarifies your skin. Step 1: Follow the steps outlined above to complete the oil cleanse. Step 2: Lather your hands with soap and massage gently into damp skin, focusing on problematic areas Step 3: Rinse with water and pat dry  Check out our line of skin-specific cleansing bars for a tailored experience. Tip: If you’re a visual learner and want to see double cleansing in action, check out this video tutorial on double cleansing. FAQ: Should I double cleanse every time I wash my face? Answer: Whether you choose a double cleanse or just a cleansing oil depends on many factors, like: Climate – hot and humid climates can create excess oil, while dry arid climates can leave skin without enough oil (and moisture). Lifestyle – sugar, caffeine, and alcohol can impact your skin, as well as exercise, nutrition, and mindset. You also want to consider environmental factors like high-pollution areas you may be exposed to at work. Skin state – we all have different skin needs at different times of our lives depending on hormones, age, or other internal and external factors. Unfortunately, there’s no solid answer here. So get to know your skin and see how it responds!  Tip: If you’re experiencing dryness using a double cleanse, you might need to stick with just oil cleansing the majority of the time. An occasional double cleanse might help after a particularly sweaty workout, during a hormonal breakout, or other times your skin is producing more oil or exposed to more elements (or bacteria). FAQ: Should I double cleanse morning and evening? Answer: Everyone’s skin is different, but regardless of whether you do an oil cleanse or a double cleanse, we recommend you only wash your face once a day, at the end of the day. A simple splash of water before your daily routine is great for the AM. Why? Too much cleansing strips your skin, regardless of whether it’s a gentle formula. Throughout the day time, your face is exposed to far more contaminants. Things like air pollution, touching your face, or environmental toxins mean more exposure to harmful bacteria or toxins. At night, your skin isn’t exposed to as many factors while sleeping. So a simple splash of water followed by your normal morning routine is sufficient. Tip: Here’s an example of a morning and night routine that might work for you. FAQ: Are cleansing oils pregnancy safe? Answer: We feel confident all of our oil-cleansing formulas are safe for use during pregnancy in most cases and pose no known risks. But keep in mind, we aren’t doctors – so if you have any questions or concerns, it’s best to take them up with your OB or midwife to be on the safe side. FAQ: Can I make my own cleansing oil at home?  Answer: Yep, you can! Though honestly, it took us a ton of trial and error, along with years of research to perfect each of our formulas for different skin states.  Plus, when you use our cleansing oils you can: Use our skin quiz to save money (aka – get the right formula the first time around) Be confident in cold-pressed carrier oils and high-quality ingredients that are grown organically and sourced sustainably Pair them with our other products specifically designed to meet your unique skin needs  If it were us, we’d just take the easy route and choose a pre-made formula. ;) However, if you’re feeling adventurous (or the budget is tight) here’s a homemade recipe from our founder you can try.  Skin-Specific Questions About Oil Cleansing Some of your questions might feel specific to your skin condition or concerns. That’s totally valid, and we’re here to help.  FAQ: What can I expect during the adjustment phase with switching to oil cleansing?  Everyone’s skin is different, so the adjustment phase can vary. There’s no exact formula for what to expect. Here are a few things that you might experience: Your skin producing excess oil for a brief period of time Inflammation or breakouts as your sebum production learns how to regulate You may not experience any changes or transition, yay! Either way, know your skin is doing its job, and a clear, glowing complexion is on the way. It’s only temporary, and on the flip side, many of our customers find it clears up acne even better than conventional cleansers! FAQ: What products are good for milia? Answer: Milia are small hard bumps that form on the surface of the skin – often white or yellow in color. And they can be quite hard to get rid of without the help of a dermatologist.  Oil cleansing may help prevent milia by keeping buildup at bay – which contributes to milia forming. As far as resolving milia, that’s a job for the facial brush. ;) A facial brush can be used as your first step in the morning. Do it after a splash of water to refresh your skin and lightly remove impurities.  FAQ: Can I use a cleansing oil if I have acne?  Answer: Absolutely! Acne is typically caused by multiple factors, one of them being the overproduction of oil. A properly balanced moisture barrier will help prevent your skin from going into oil production overdrive. Oil cleansing is one of the most effective ways to reset your skin’s oil output and dissolve excess oil. It’s based on the scientific principle that “like attracts like.” So adding oil actually helps purify excess oil while keeping that delicate moisture barrier intact. Tip: Don’t be scared of moisture with acne. Moisture helps soothe and heal your skin. It’s the pore-clogging ingredients that DON’T help. Rest assured all our ingredients are non-pore-clogging (aka non-comedogenic) so you’ll never need to worry about that. FAQ: What if I have mixed skin states? Which cleansing oil should I use?  Answer: Our normal formula is best for targeting a combination of dry and oily spots. It also evens out your sebum (oil) production. Other irregularities can be addressed with personalized tools, serums, and moisturizers. Masks add another level of intentional care.  Tip: Check out the multi-masking trend for a fun, new way to personalize your skincare routine. And you’ve heard this before but, the best way to discover a unique suggestion catered to your skin is through our newly-revamped skin quiz. ;)  FAQ: If I have sensitive skin which cleansing oil should I use?  Answer: It depends on what type of sensitivities you’re experiencing. → Dry, flakey skin may benefit from deeper moisture with our “dry” formula. → Acne-prone, inflamed skin that produces too much oil may need the “oily” formula. Tip: Our PP skin quiz will provide even more specific suggestions for your whole routine! The Adjustment Phase of the Oil Cleansing Method You may have heard about the dreaded adjustment phase. It’s true – some people’s skin needs time to transition to this new method of cleansing. But stick with it, the results are so worth it! FAQ: Why is my face more oily than before? Answer: This is likely just your skin purging to reset its oil production. Give it time, and try double cleansing to remove excess oils and help your skin regulate. FAQ: How long does it take for my skin to adjust to oil cleansing? Answer: It can range from 2 weeks to 2 months. Why? Because skin is very personal – your skin won’t react the same as someone else’s. Some will experience a transition (“adjustment period”) because their skin has been exposed to toxic chemicals or over-stripping and needs to purge.  Some people simply experience minor irritation and inflammation as the skin adjusts to a new method of cleansing. This is totally normal and will resolve itself. It’s impossible to put an exact timeline on the transition phase. We know it’s hard, but try to be patient. You’ve got this! Here’s what you can do in the meantime to support your skin while it’s adjusting: Give your detox pathways some love (this “transition” is just your body detoxing from exposure to conventional skincare or excess oil). Hydrate intentionally to keep fluids moving and assist your skin in pushing out impurities. Sweat often – it’s a healthy way to release toxins and reset your body. Use a dry brush or a gua sha facial stone to open healing pathways and support lymphatic flow. Tip: You may not experience an adjustment phase, and that’s fine too! Don’t worry. How the skin reacts is unique to each individual’s skin state and circumstances. FAQ: What if I don’t have an adjustment period (breakouts, inflammation) with oil cleansing, is it still working?  Answer: Yep! If you don’t experience breakouts, inflammation, etc. when you switch to oil cleansing, nothing is wrong! You definitely don’t have to see a “transition period” to know that oil cleansing is working.  Let your skin be the real test. ;)  How to Pair Oil Cleansing With Other Skincare Products It can be confusing to add a new product to your routine. Here are all our most common questions about using a cleansing oil in combination with other products. FAQ: After oil cleansing, should I still use a moisturizer, a serum, or both? Answer: We recommend using toner, serum, and moisturizer after oil cleansing.  Our favorite post-oil cleanse routine is spritzing a mist and finishing with a serum/cream. This is key to targeting specific skin concerns + maintaining the proper ratio of water/oil for resilient, radiant skin. Each product plays a role in providing nutrients and protection at different levels of the skin. (But if you're in a pinch and don't have a toner/serum/cream, it's okay to skip that step every once in a while.) However, your skin might do fine without extra moisture – particularly throughout the summer or if you live in a warm climate. Some of our PP customers find that oil cleansing alone is enough moisture to keep their skin happy. It’s up to you.  Tip: To gain more knowledge on what your skin is craving, check out our skin quiz.  FAQ: Can I pair a cleansing oil with my Clarisonic or facial device? Answer: We recommend sticking with your hands for the oil cleansing method because it doesn’t disrupt your skin’s delicate microbiome or skin barrier. Plus, oils are not fun to clean off of a brush! But if you're really loving the results from your facial cleansing tool/device, try it with one of our Cleansing Bars instead. This will give you a foaming cleanse that can work more effectively with your device. If you’re worried about missing the exfoliation aspect, try a facial dry brush instead for a gentle skin renewal that protects your skin barrier. What to Expect After Using a Cleansing Oil New products come with new results! Here’s what you can expect after switching to a cleansing oil – both immediate and long-term. FAQ: What if my skin still feels dry after oil cleansing?  Answer: There are so many factors that can contribute to your skin state! While it’s hard to say without seeing your skin in person, we’d recommend two things: After cleansing, spritz your skin with a Skin-Specific Mist to infuse hydration and prep your skin to absorb serum/cream more deeply. Supplement with more moisture through richer creams and serums, especially at night. You may need to switch to our “dry” cleansing oil for deeper moisture. Tip: Our baby balm can double as a deep moisturizing cream for nighttime.  FAQ: I’ve tried oil cleansing before, and it didn’t work – what do you recommend? Answer: The first thing we’d ask is: Did you give it a full 2 months? Of course, this sounds incredibly long, but everyone’s situation and skin state are different. Until you give it a solid shot, you’ll never know what you’re missing out on. ;)  Our advice: If you’re willing to give it another go, believe us – you’ll be so pleased with the results after your skin adjusts. We’re here to support you in the meantime! Here are a few extra tips for supporting your skin: Choose nourishing whole foods to support your skin from the inside out. Avoid consuming seed oils + the dreaded three: sugar, alcohol, and gluten. Hydrate like you mean it. This helps your body continue to push out impurities. Sweat more – this is another effective way to push out toxins. Plus you’ll gain other mental and physical health benefits. Pair your cleansing oil with our Everything Spray for additional anti-bacterial properties to help calm any potential breakouts during the adjustment phase. Tip: If you’ve tried everything above – you can keep it simple with glycerin or water-based soap instead of a cleansing oil. Our skin-specific bars are also a non-toxic, nourishing product that will wash away the day without overdrying the skin. (Our soothing bar is the most friendly for sensitive skin.) FAQ: Will my skin feel oily immediately after cleansing?  Answer: If you properly remove all the oil at the end of your cleanse, you shouldn’t feel any oily residue – just nourished, hydrated and happy skin! Tip: We recommend using a warm washcloth to wipe away all the product – and sometimes you may need to use both sides of the washcloth to fully remove the oil. Questions About How Oil Cleansing Works With a new method that hasn’t quite made its way to mainstream skincare, it’s understandable that you might have questions about how exactly this oil will clean your skin effectively, and what it’s capable of. FAQ: How does a cleansing oil actually clean my skin?  Answer: Let’s start here: Like dissolves like. It’s really sciency, but here’s what you should know: Chemical surfactants (aka lathering, bubbly, and foamy liquids) found in most cleansers strip the skin too severely. In turn, this kickstarts excessive oil production – not what we want! Our cleansing oil, on the other hand, gently “melt” the oils in your skin to cleanse and push out impurities. On top of that, our cleansing oils all contain a therapeutic essential oil blend that brings balance to all skin states. Double whammy.   Oil cleansing is powerfully anti-bacterial. But if you’re feeling concerned about getting your face 100% squeaky clean (or you’ve been exposed to polluted air or finished a sweat session) doing a double cleanse with a bar is a great way to go. And if you’re wondering why we recommend a double cleanse with our lathering bars specifically, it’s not just because we’re biased! These are totally different formulas that are water-based or glycerin-based with the added benefit of skin-loving herbs and botanicals for an extremely gentle and non-abrasive sudsing effect. Just remember, your skin microbiome is intuitive if you leave it be. An oil cleanse is the perfect option for cleansing while respecting skin integrity. Let your skin be the guide. ;)  Tip: Our everything spray helps reset your skin PH which helps manage and eliminate unwanted bacterial growth. FAQ: Does oil cleansing remove makeup? Answer: Yes! It’s completely fine to apply your cleansing oil right on top of makeup. Though you may want to use something fragrance-free like our baby oil around the eyes if you’re sensitive to essential oils. That way you don’t risk getting any essential oils in your eyes.  Otherwise, enjoy the cleansing oils’ castor oil content which also boosts healthy brows and lashes. Tip: Depending on the type of makeup + the amount, you may want to double cleanse to fully remove the makeup. That way you can be sure all makeup is removed, so the nutrients from your other products absorb into the skin.  FAQ: Does oil cleansing help with cystic acne?  Answer: You bet! Oil cleansing is actually more gentle than traditional acne cleansers which contain harsh chemicals like salicylic acid and endocrine-disrupting fragrances – which we know are also contributors to acne! If you’re dealing with stubborn acne, check out these resources for more tips: Endocrine Disruptors in Acne and Teenage-Focused Products How to Go From Cystic Acne to Clear Skin A Skincare Routine for Teens Struggling With Acne Hormonal Acne + Breakouts: Natural Remedies That Work Ready to Join the World of Oil Cleansing?  Oil cleansing done correctly can create significant and long-term changes in your skin. It resets your skin’s oil production and gently cleanses away the day’s impurities – minus the stripping effect. Hallelujah!  Hopefully, this is a resource you can continue to reference if you’re feeling unsure or want some guidance in your skincare journey with oil cleansing.  Once you get accustomed, you’ll never look back – that much, we can promise.  And as always, we’re here for your questions. Oil + Water: Why Your Skin Needs Both (Our Holistic Esthetician Explains)

Today I'm debunking the myth that oil and water don't mix. Because when it comes to skin health, that's where the magic really happens. But depending on different skin conditions, preconceived notions about products or adopting a minimalist approach to skincare, you may be more drawn to using only one component of this duo: oil or water. Except, that’s only half of the healthy skin equation. Hydration (water) + moisture (oil) = The optimal combo for combatting both dryness and dehydration to create skin that’s clear, resilient and seriously glows. Hydration and moisture are words often used interchangeably, however, they’re actually different components (and foundational elements) for balanced skin. And if you’re not getting both, your skin's not getting the full range of nutrients it needs - while making it more susceptible to sensitivities, premature aging and breakouts. Let’s break it down. It all starts with understanding your skin’s needs, how it’s been created to function, the difference between dryness and dehydration, and how oil + water work synergistically to completely transform not only the efficacy of your skincare routine, but your skin itself. Water Our bodies, including our skin, are made up of almost entirely water so this is an essential component for skin to function optimally.  When you think water, think hydration - just like you would when it comes to your overall health. Whether it's in the body or on the skin, lack of water leads to dehydration. Dehydrated skin is considered a skin condition (as opposed to a skin state - even oil-rich skin can experience dehydration!) and can be impacted by our internal/external environments: climate changes physical movement water intake from food + bevs (or lack thereof) alcohol and caffeine consumption environmental pollution topical skincare products (ineffective formulas or routines) One of the skin's main jobs is to be a defensive barrier: keeping out chemicals, bacteria and harmful substances, while ensuring water and other necessary nutrients stay intact – preventing dehydration, injury and sun damage. Without water, skin's ability to provide protection (and appear vibrant and youthful) becomes seriously compromised. Our body and our skin barrier need water to thrive (even oil-rich skin states!) - but it's not just about getting more water into your body or onto your skin, it's all about absorption. Effectively absorbing the water you're giving your skin is everything. For boosting hydration in the body, we know that adding fresh herbs or lemon (plant materials) or even sea salt (minerals) significantly helps, and the same goes for your water-based skincare products.  Natural face toners incorporate floral waters (aka hydrosols) which provide a drink of water for your skin cells, lock in hydration plus provide vitamins and vital nutrients to boost absorption and benefits. Plant waters prep the skin to easily absorb additional moisture and help deliver nutrients more deeply from oil-based serums/creams. Here are a few of our favs to increase water content in the skin: Lavender hydrosol: This antibacterial botanical calms sensitivities, restores hydration and expedites the healing process for compromised skin barriers. Neroli hydrosol: Packed with antioxidants, this exotic blossom stimulates cell renewal along with anti-inflammatory compounds to minimize acne/scarring and balance oil production. Rose hydrosol: This beautifying plant protects skin from water loss by locking in hydration along with vitamins A + C to even skin tone and create a firmer, more dewy complexion. Rebuilding healthier, hydrated skin starts with a spritz. So if you're skipping this crucial step, you’re missing out a major component of a balanced, glowing complexion. Water Warning: When water is listed on a skincare product label (often it's the very first), it comes with some strings attached: preservatives. The presence of water requires some sort of preservative to protect it from bacteria growth, but the majority of preservatives in skincare today are hormone disruptors, skin irritants and carcinogenic. Instead, opt for a natural preservative like radish root ferment filtrate that also infuses the skin with healing properties. Win win.   Oil  Now that we're familiar with how water can make or break your skin health, let's look at this layer of oil that hasn’t had the greatest reputation over the years - but thankfully (for the sake of your skin) the oil-free myth is finally being debunked.  When you think oil, think moisture - and lack of oil leads to dryness. Dry skin is considered a skin state as it’s more closely connected to the inherent makeup of your skin. But that doesn’t mean tight, flaky skin is your fate - just like with hydration, there are lifestyle factors and topical products that can improve how your skin behaves and help restore that happy balance. Another job our skin’s got on its plate is to produce lipids naturally (it’s actually a healthy and very necessary function of the skin called: secretion) with the goal of keeping skin moisturized, resilient and elastic. However, too much or too little oil can create an identity crisis for your skin - from congestion to reactive skin to premature aging. Just like with our body’s water content, internal/external factors can cause this skin’s function to be in flux and contribute to imbalances like these below: Over-stimulation of sebum = buildup, congestion + problematic breakouts Decrease in oil = dryness, signs of aging + sensitivities Typically, the approach to balance oil is by over cleansing, chronic exfoliation and stocking up on oil-free products. But clear, glowing skin isn’t created by stripping away every last ounce of oil, but by establishing a healthy relationship with your sebaceous glands. How does that happen? A steady diet of essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants found in skin-loving oils that actually feed the skin, reinforcing its delicate acid mantle and strengthening its lipid barrier to keep these nutrients intact. Here are some of our favorite oils that feed the skin - and could be the missing link in your moisture levels: Prickly Pear Seed Oil: This desert dwelling plant is packed with fatty acids, acne-fighting minerals like zinc along with vitamins E (the highest of any plant source!) and K to balance oil production, restore elasticity and repair sun-induced pigmentation. Marula Oil: Native to South Africa, its healing and hydrating powers are potent in vitamins C and E and quickly absorbed by the skin (good news for our oil-rich friends!) to reduce inflammation, heal scarring and balance the skin barrier. Squalane Oil: Sourced from olives, squalane is easily recognized by the skin and deeply absorbs to protect the delicate acid mantle, improve moisture balance and restore reactive skin states. Remember the topic of proper absorption from above? Well, without the prep work from your plant waters to replenish hydration first, all of this superfood goodness in your oil-based serums will simply sit on top of your skin instead of deeply penetrating to feed it on a cellular level. As we think of water as a much-needed drink for the skin, think of oil as feeding the skin - and both are essential for a well-rounded, nutrient-rich diet, I mean, skincare routine. ;) Oil-Rich? Read this: Even skin with overactive sebaceous glands (like acne-prone/oil-rich complexions) needs a healthy balance of water and oil to keep the skin’s barrier happy. The whole “oil-free” approach isn’t actually the best way to beat breakouts or keep skin clear. By withholding water and oil from your skin, you’re stripping its own natural sebum and on your way to creating a complexion that’s *more* prone to acne and oil production that spirals out of control. The solution? A steady diet of both water and oil (and a whole-food diet, too!). Oil + Water: How To Use Both For Best Results   Step 1: Double Cleansing - The very first, and foundational, step in your skincare routine also incorporates the magic combo of oil + water to ensure a completely clean, balanced complexion. First cleanse: Cleansing Oils purify excess sebum (remember science class 101: like attracts like), dissolve buildup and melt away makeup while maintaining the skin’s natural lipid barrier. Massage oil onto dry skin, remove with warm/wet washcloth and voila! Second cleanse: Suds up with a second cleanser that contains properties that are customized to your skin’s specific needs. Splash skin with water, lather and lift away impurities, rinse and then mist. Step 2: Spritz Mist - Pair a natural face toner with an oil-based serum/cream for a combo that combats all signs of dehydration and dryness - no matter your skin state. Because hydration and moisture are both necessary for balanced skin, your toner/serum combo are the duo that’s going to make the biggest difference in your skin’s texture, clarity and tone. Step 3: Skin-Specific Serum - Layer an oil-based serum over your hydrosol (while skin is still damp) to retain skin’s hydration levels, seal in moisture, infuse nutrients more deeply and support a layer of healthy lipids on the skin barrier. Skin Tip: Oil quality is everything - look for cold-pressed, organic oils to create the most nutrient-rich serum. Step 4: Skin-Specific Cream - Want to take hydration and healing one step further? Apply a cream over your serum to seal in active ingredients and protect the outermost layer of your skin. Then, add a final mist of facial toner. Step 5: Spritz Mist - This step is optional, but highly suggested for another surge of hydration and healing. Whether your skin is typically tight/dry after cleansing or you’re struggling with red/reactive skin or you reach for oil blotting sheets midday, this magic duo of oil + water might just be the missing link you’ve been looking for.

How to Oil Cleanse: How to Do It Correctly + Mistakes to Avoid

This is a 2-part series on the Oil Cleansing Method. Like many things in life, sometimes doing it is only helpful if you do it correctly. So no shame if you’re wondering exactly how to oil cleanse.  This post shares tips on how to oil cleanse and the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) mistakes you might be making. Be sure to check out Part 1 to discover the oil cleansing myths you may be believing (they might surprise you). Face cleansing with oil isn’t just a trending topic – it’s truly the key to clean, balanced, and healthy skin. In fact, several skin issues you may experience can be significantly improved by simply cleansing your skin properly.  If you feel a little overwhelmed, or just want to make sure you’re doing it correctly, this post is for you. You’ll walk away with some helpful tips on how to oil cleanse and be able to troubleshoot any mistakes you might be making.  Whether you have sensitive, combination, dry, aging, or even acne-prone skin, read on for directions on how to oil cleanse properly for healthy + happy skin! First Things First: How to Oil Cleanse Hey, no shame if this is where you need to start. We’ve got you covered. Here’s your step-by-step guide for how to oil cleanse:  Remove your Makeup. You can use your cleansing oil directly on dry skin or opt for a gentle baby oil if you have sensitive skin around your eyes. Rub the oil into your skin in circular motions until your makeup is dissolved and can be easily wiped away with a warm wet washcloth. Massage PP’s Cleansing Oil into dry skin with your fingertips. This is the most critical step when learning how to oil cleanse properly. It’s important to massage the cleansing oil into your skin for at least 1 min, but 2-3 minutes is even better. This provides plenty of time for the cleansing oil to work its magic, dissolving impurities + excess oil build-up in the pores. The longer you massage, the more nutrients are delivered to the skin, + blood flow is encouraged. So think of it as your daily act of self-love and embrace the process. Wet a clean washcloth with warm water to give your face a steam bath. Don’t get too hot here. You don’t want to disrupt the skin’s delicate barrier with scalding heat. It should be warm enough to create steam but not hot enough heat to make it uncomfortable. The goal is to give yourself a mini steam treatment for a few moments of bliss + opening pores. Take several deep breaths and soak in the relaxing scent of essential oils. Hold the washcloth to your face until it cools. This step in face cleansing with oil further encourages the cleansing oil to clear out impurities and bring any build-up to the surface so you can wipe it away easily. Use the washcloth to wipe away excess oil + impurities. Notice we said wipe, not scrub. You should be able to remove all the oil with one or two gentle wipes over the face. But keep in mind that face cleansing with oil leaves your skin moisturized instead of stripped dry. So oil cleansing may feel different than what you’re used to with a traditional cleanser. As long as your skin feels clean + smooth, and there’s no residual oil that can be wiped off, you’re all set. If needed, repeat the process or try a double cleanse. This is optional because everyone’s skin state is unique, and every day’s routine looks different. Some days, you might want an extra cleanse after a good sweat, or if you went straight for step #2 with the cleansing oil, you might need an extra cleanse for grime + makeup.  That’s it. Now you know all the basics on how to oil cleanse properly. Let’s cover some of the most common mistakes we see with cleansing oils and confusion about how to use cleansing oils. Mistake #1: You’re Oil Cleansing With the Wrong Formula If you’re a visual learner, you can find countless tutorials for DIY cleansing oil recipes + how to oil cleanse across Pinterest.  However, finding the proper cleansing oil blend for your specific skin can be quite the process (and one that might take a toll on your skin!).  Oil cleansing works for all skin states when the correct oils + ratios are being used. We’ve done the hard work for you. Our cleansing oil blends are based on copious amounts of research + trial and error to determine which formulations are best for any given skin type.  So the blend that’ll work best for you depends on your skin state (oily, normal, or dry) and the climate you live in.  We want it to be easy to choose what works best for you and YOUR skin. If you’re not sure, take our skin state quiz for a personalized recommendation!  Mistake #2: You’re Not Massaging Long Enough The less time you massage, the less time you give the cleansing oil to dissolve build-up and nourish the skin with powerful plant nutrients. You can think of this as a time to relax and massage away the stresses of the day. Not only does this step feel so relaxing and helps stimulate circulation in the skin, but it’s also crucial for proper + thorough cleansing. So if you want to know how to oil cleanse, the time spent massaging is a significant factor in the results you’ll see. Be sure you massage the cleansing oil onto dry skin for at least a minute. Use outward + upward circular motions and spend a few extra seconds on problem areas like the chin and forehead, where you may experience more build-up or breakouts.  With the needed time, cleansing oil can work wonders to dissolve makeup, impurities, and sebum that’ve built up in your pores. It can also give you a spa-like treatment right from home. Breathe and enjoy – this time is for you.  Mistake #3: You’re Re-Using Washcloths And/Or Using Hot Water Temperature and cleanliness are priority when it comes to washcloth use. → Washcloths can easily harbor bacteria, so always use a clean cloth for oil cleansing – or really anything related to your skin (hygiene practices 101). To keep it real, using a dirty towel could defeat the purpose of cleansing your skin if you expose it to day-old bacteria and grime from a pre-used washcloth.  → Soak your clean, organic cotton washcloth in super-warm water. (Warm, not hot.) Scalding hot water can cause skin sensitivities or dehydration. On the flip side, tepid water won't soften your skin properly to pull out impurities. The gentle steam from a super-warm washcloth helps bring dirt, debris, makeup, and build-up to the surface of your skin. Like many things in life, these few tweaks may sound simple, but try them out – you’ll be impressed at the difference you experience. Mistake #4: Giving up Before the Glow.  You know we always dish the truth. So we won’t lie, for some people, oil cleanse purging is just part of the process for you to see the desired results in your skin. There’s often a cleansing oil adjustment process (aka, your skin may get worse for about a week or two), but we highly encourage you to stick it out.  Why? Your skin is doing something amazing, even in the oil cleanse purging phase. If you’ve transitioned to natural deodorant, you know it can take time for your body to adjust + reset to a new product. Oil cleansing is similar in this way. So it may take some time for your skin to adjust. The best advice? Give it time +  trust the process. :)  Keep in mind that it may take 2-3 weeks for your skin to fully adjust to face cleansing with oil. It takes time to fully detoxify from the build-up that’s been residing comfortably in your pores up until now. Still trying to decide about switching to cleansing oil? Here are some five-star oil cleanse before and after testimonials to encourage you to not give up. → "I've always had loads of blackheads and random pimples that show up and take forever to go away. Within a few weeks of using this cleansing oil (along with the everything spray and beauty cream), the composition of my skin COMPLETELY CHANGED." – Anna, PP Customer → "It was a very different shift for me, having previously used oil-free anti-acne cleanser, but my skin feels so moisturized and wonderful after I use it. I love the scent, and my skin has flourished after switching to this product." – Allison, PP Customer → "Finally, a cleanser that does it all and leaves your skin refreshed without feeling ‘tight.’" – Sue, PP Customer → "I've been struggling with dry skin and breakouts for months now, and after only two weeks, I've noticed a significant improvement in the texture and tone of my skin, and I'm much more hydrated!" – Shawnie, PP Customer → "I went as far as trying Accutane to get rid of my breakouts. I also have rosacea and extremely sensitive skin. I will never go back to anything else. This product is amazing and has calmed my redness down, and no more oily face. This wash makes me feel so good." – Renee, PP Customer If your skin is still reacting after about a month of trying out the OCM, you could potentially be sensitive to a specific ingredient. CBD Oil: Why It’s Not Just A Trend + How It Will Transform Your Skin

Trendy, controversial, cure-all – CBD Oil has been described countless ways as it’s made its way into doctors offices, health food stores, beauty products and even pet shops. CBD Oil has reached an all time high (pun intended 😉 ) and the hype around this hemp-derived oil is also sweeping the skincare industry so we’ve been digging deep to uncover the facts. Our founder, Bethany, even traveled across the country to visit one of the world’s *best* CBD distributors to get a behind the scenes look at CBD. We can’t wait to share what we discovered. We’re breaking down what CBD oil actually is, the reality of THC (the part of the plant that gives it its bad rap), how the extraction method makes a BIG difference and the real reasons why CBD has become so much more than just a trend – but a truly transformative ingredient. WHAT IS CBD These days, everyone and their dog has heard about Cannabis – but what is it exactly? Cannabis is a flowering plant family with several different species, one being Cannabis Sativa, and has been used since ancient times for its medicinal benefits. Just like several plant varieties, Cannabis Sativa contains active compounds called cannabinoids. While the plant contains over a hundred different cannabinoids, two of the most common are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – more about THC later. 🙂 CBD is one of the most prominent + popular compounds found in the Cannabis Sativa plant and contains powerful, beneficial properties for a plethora of health + skin concerns – all without the psychoactive side effects that are experienced from THC (but more about that later!). Those mind-altering side effects seem to be a concern for several people, so simply put, CBD infuses the skin and body with nutrient-dense goodness but without any worries of getting high. THE METHOD MATTERS Because of its rich medicinal and therapeutic benefits, you want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your CBD Oil. Just like with any natural skincare ingredient, the way it’s grown, sourced, and processed impacts the efficacy of the final product. So we’re about to explain why the method of extraction can make or break your CBD experience. The majority of extraction methods for CBD Oil use high temperatures for long periods of time. What’s the problem with that process? For the same reasons we want to drink cold-pressed juices and why we don’t want to cook with EVOO. More heat means more breakdown of delicate molecules – and less goodness on your skin + in your body. It completely strips the plant of its potent compounds and significantly diminishes its effectiveness. Not only do these industrial methods incorporate high heat, they often use solvents (such as propane, butane and ethanol – yikes) which are dangerous, highly flammable and risk leaving behind residual chemicals and contaminating the purity of the CBD Oil. No, thanks. Another downside to many CBD products on the market (in our personal skincare opinion!) is that they include CBD Isolate. With a more transparent, thinner consistency, CBD Isolate is exactly what it sounds like: isolating CBD from the rest of the plant compounds – it’s refined until only pure CBD remains. Sure, pure CBD oil sounds great, but ultimately, your skin is missing out on all of the other beneficial properties found in the plant. So what exactly are these potent compounds in CBD oil that we want to protect? Terpenes: You might be familiar with terpenes if you’ve ever used essential oils! There are hundreds of these naturally occurring compounds found in Cannabis and they’re what gives the plant its unique scent + specific effects and helps to boost absorption of other beneficial components of the plant. Flavonoids: Found in various foods + flowers, flavonoids are what create their vivid colors (think: raspberries, roses and yes, wine!). They are rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and when partnered with terpenes + cannabinoids, the therapeutic properties are seriously enhanced. Cannabinoids: While cannabinoids can be found in several plant species, there are over 100 of these beneficial compounds found in the Cannabis Sativa plant specifically that bind to receptors in the body. Our favorite cannabinoid and the one we’re focusing on today, CBD, primarily impacts the immune system and skin (unlike THC, which binds to receptors in the brain – hence, it’s mind-altering effects) to powerfully support health + homeostasis. So what if there was a way to extract CBD oil in a natural way that keeps its powerful, terpene-rich profile intact? Well, there is – and it’s how our Soothing Serum +CBD Oil is extracted! Before we dive into this unique, natural distillation process, we need to talk plant quality which is something we really care about at Primally Pure. Organically grown hemp is the only way to go. We want to stay far away from pesticides on our plate and in our skincare products. Our CBD Oil is sourced from hemp grown on organic farms in the U.S. and the quality control is taken a step further as it’s triple tested for any traces of toxins, harmful pesticides, and heavy metals. Once the organic hemp plants are harvested + tested, it’s time to extract the CBD oil. Using only heated air for a few, short seconds (no chemicals or solvents needed), vapor distillation is the only method in the world – yup, in the whole wide world – that ensures there are no traces of toxic chemicals (i.e. hexane, butane, propane), protects the fragile plant material and maintains the full-spectrum of beneficial compounds (like cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, etc). They call this: flash activation + flash extraction. The quick burst of heat (instead of hours exposed to high temperatures) captures all of the delicate, beneficial compounds of the plant without damaging or compromising the CBD in any way. With a greenish/brownish hue + thicker consistency, this hemp-derived, full-spectrum oil is something experts like to refer to as the Entourage Effect. It contains the broadest + most beneficial variety of plant compounds in their specific ratios to optimize the effects of CBD oil. Studies have even shown that the synergy of phytonutrients has a greater capacity to contribute to skin health, homeostasis + your overall sense of wellness. When it comes to CBD and its compounds, they’re better together. To sum it all up, why is the CBD extraction process such a big deal? You get more of the good stuff and less of the bad. The full plant profile is in the final product and your skin will reap the benefits. THE TRUTH ABOUT THC So by now, you may be thinking, “Okay cool, the full plant profile – I’m all about it. But that must mean THC is still present?” Yup, it’s time to talk THC. One of the most common questions + concerns about CBD Oil is: “Will it make me high?” Short answer: Nope. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is another naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the Cannabis Sativa plant and is most famous for its psychoactive properties (aka that “stoned” feeling). Part of the controversy with THC, and even CBD, is due to the confusion surrounding the verbiage being used about the topic: weed, hemp, marijuana, cannabis, CBD… what’s what? While we’re not going to get into the nitty-gritty of ganja, here’s a simple guideline to help explain. Not to be confused as the exact same plant, think of Hemp and Marijuana more like cousins. While they’re in the same Cannabis family, their functions are slightly different. One of the main differences between the two is their THC content. Marijuana is higher in THC and lower in CBD, while Hemp is higher in CBD but lower in THC. To keep things legal (and sober), distributors extract CBD oil from Hemp – not Marijuana – so there are only trace amounts of THC (staying well below the less than .3% guidelines set for CBD Oil products). But while THC may have a bad rap, there is actually some good that comes from this cannabinoid. In minimal amounts, THC helps to contribute to that Entourage Effect we explained earlier. By maintaining the full plant profile, instead of isolating a specific component of the plant (like with CBD Isolate), your skin is fed the full range of benefits found in that ingredient. All full-spectrum CBD Oils are going to have trace amounts of THC – keeping the synergistic benefits intact but without altering your state of mind or leaving you with the munchies. It simply creates a more potent, transformative CBD oil and offers significantly more therapeutic + medicinal support for skin and overall wellness. Starting to understand CBD oil a bit better? Good! Because we’ve got even more CBD goodness to share with you – and specifically, how it will seriously transform your skin. BENEFITS OF CBD OIL FOR SKIN While people have been taking CBD Oil internally to help relieve issues like anxiety, pain, depression, inflammation and insomnia for centuries, it’s just recently become a buzz word in the beauty world. And for GOOD reason. Just like the benefits that CBD Oil offers when ingested (a more quiet mind, calm mood + balanced state of being), research is showing that it has a similar effect when applied topically to the skin. The visible improvements in the skin are why this natural ingredient is starting to saturate the skincare market. This beauty botanical is most well known for its potent antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits. So for sensitive skin, acne-prone complexions, and inflammatory conditions, CBD is a dream. When you think CBD, think skin superfood. It contains a variety of vitamins (like Vitamin A, D + E), minerals and multiple amino acids (the building blocks of our body) to strengthen the skin, create a more resilient complexion and optimize collagen production. It has the perfect ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids to maintain a healthy appearance and more GLA (Gamma Linoleic Acid a.k.a. a strong anti-inflammatory compound) than any other plant, helping to relieve painful skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Plus, by helping to inhibit the buildup of dead skin cells and minimize inflammation, it’s an effective natural acne treatment. Okay, we might sound like a broken record, but quality really matters when it comes to the CBD Oil in your skincare. Be sure your hemp-derived, whole-plant CBD Oil is sourced from organically grown plants so the product (and your skin!) is free from pesticides and harmful chemicals. And remember, full-spectrum ensures the Entourage Effect is in full force and unlocks the plant’s full power to maintain its rich profile of terpenes, cannabinoids, and flavonoids to create the highest level of efficacy available. As a powerful skin soother for puffy, red, stressed, irritated, damaged, inflamed (should we go on?) complexions, CBD’s presence in the skincare world will only continue to expand because of its power to truly transform the skin. And we cannot wait for you to experience it.   While conversations (and even laws) surrounding CBD may still seem unclear or controversial and research is still uncovering the full impact CBD can have on the skin, we hope this post helps to clear the air about Cannabis and why we’re sold on its transformative benefits – for skin, mind and body.
