Need a Non-toxic Moisturizer? How to Choose: Body Oil vs. Body Butter

It’s not just your face that depends on moisture to retain healthy, radiant skin. The skin on your body relies on moisture just as much! But we find that an organic moisturizer for the body is a topic often overlooked in the beauty industry. Not to mention the struggle of finding a non-toxic moisturizer that checks all your boxes.  → Should you go for a lotion? A whipped lotion? A body oil? A body butter? What's the difference?  Well, for starters, we understand ingredients can get confusing. Aka, which to avoid and which are best for your skin. Plus, when’s best to apply a non-toxic moisturizer – first thing in the morning or before bed?  Moisturizing can quickly become a complicated subject.  That’s why we’re here to help. ;) We’re going to walk you through the differences + all the things to consider when deciding between our two non-toxic moisturizers. When choosing a non-toxic and organic moisturizer, we want you to have customized options. Body Oil vs. Body Butter Nothing is wrong with lotion, but we prefer to keep it simple and choose between body oil vs. body butter. In our experience, these are the two most effective ways to bring supple moisture to your skin.  That’s why these two non-toxic moisturizers are our top choices for full-body hydration. How Body Oil Works as a Non-toxic Moisturizer Consistency Yes, body oil is made of oils, as the name would imply. But it’s not greasy. Especially when applied on damp skin, this non-toxic moisturizer soaks in effortlessly.  We created PP’s Body Oil to resemble the oils in your skin so it’s absorbed easily. No need to stress about oils staining your clothing or the feeling of greasy skin. (Not ideal.) Content Usually, body oil is made up of carrier oils (base oils) and sometimes combined with fragrance or other filler oils. At Primally Pure, this organic moisturizer only contains the highest quality oils – that are good for your skin and your overall health.  On top of that, it’s fortified with a blend of organic and wildcrafted essential oils with specific healing + aromatherapy properties. We handpick all ingredients for their properties to repair parched skin, calm inflammation, and provide a punch of antioxidants.  Our body oils contain the following carrier oils: Fractionated Coconut Oil Kukui Nut Oil Organic Sweet Almond Oil Organic Argan Oil Organic Tamanu Oil Moisture Level Generally, body oil provides light to medium moisture. Surprised? While it absorbs easily, oil is actually a lighter form of moisture when comparing body oil vs. body butter. The light consistency of this organic moisturizer makes it perfect for hydration maintenance. Use it daily as part of your routine to retain moisturized skin. Body oils leave your skin looking luminous. Application Body oil is best applied on damp skin. Water and oil work synergistically to dramatically change hydration levels. Damp skin absorbs and transports nutrients into your skin more easily to lock in hydration, just like a facial mist before applying serum. Generously apply this non-toxic moisturizer all over damp skin + let it sink in.  → Option #1: Apply your body oil after the shower (no need to towel off!).  → Option #2: If you’re not showering, generously spritz yourself with Everything Spray first to boost absorption. (Applying this mist after shaving will also prevent ingrown hairs!) → Tip: This non-toxic moisturizer sinks in quickly. You’ll be surprised at how easily it glides on. No rubbing is required – unless you want to stimulate your lymphatic system. If body oil doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, or you need a more potent organic moisturizer, body butter might be the answer for you.  Body Butter as Your Non-toxic Moisturizer of Choice If you’re looking for a more luscious or deeper moisture level, body butter might be best. We love this non-toxic moisturizer option over a traditional lotion because it contains more bioavailable ingredients that are easily recognized + absorbed by your skin. Consistency  The consistency is very different in body oil vs. body butter. It’s the most occlusive option when choosing a non-toxic moisturizer. This means it’s thicker and creates a more occlusive protective barrier. Content  Most body butters are full of nourishing and moisture-rich oils + a creamy, luscious coverage to protect and lock moisture into your skin barrier.  At Primally Pure, our formula for this organic moisturizer contains some of the most nutrient-dense ingredients available – from botanical and animal-based sources. Each is packed with rich antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and critical vitamins for healthy skin.  You’ll find ingredients like: Tallow from grass-fed cows Organic mango butter Organic shea butter Organic extra virgin coconut oil  Sweet almond oil Organic extra virgin olive oil Organic + wildcrafted essential oils Moisture Level  This is your organic moisturizer if you’re looking for medium to deep moisture. It’s best for restoring skin hydration, repairing damage from the sun or free radicals, and soothing inflammation. If your skin is especially dry, this non-toxic moisturizer will absorb into your skin and provide an extra “layer” of protection to seal it all in. Application Body butter works best on damp skin (like after a shower or bath). Similar to body oil, the water content helps the oils absorb + spread easier over your skin’s surface. When applied overnight, the nutrients can work with your body’s natural “repair mode” during sleep. → Tip: Avoid getting water into the jar – it could cause bacteria growth. → Storage Tip: This organic moisturizer may melt when exposed to extreme heat. If it does, pop it in the fridge to restore its original texture. Now that we’ve gone over the best conditions for using body butter as your non-toxic moisturizer, it’s time to take it a step further. Let’s compare body oil vs. body butter directly. Comparing Body Oil vs. Body Butter Truthfully, there’s no “better” answer. It all depends on what your body is asking for – which can change throughout the years. We actually love alternating both based on our ever-evolving skin needs! So here’s how to know which non-toxic moisturizer you need depending on your body’s cues. If you’re looking for:  A lighter, more routine non-toxic moisturizer, you may prefer a body oil. Some serious TLC for dry, cracked, or damaged skin, body butter will do the trick.  Here’s another thought: you could layer both for an intense moisture boost.  Think of it like skin layering serum + cream on the face. Your routine could look like:  Step1: Shower (or apply Everything Spray).  Step 2: Apply Body Oil.  Step 3: Then apply Body Butter to seal it all in. It comes down to your preference for feel, application, and moisture level your skin needs at the time! Our recommendation? Keep both non-toxic moisturizers on hand so you can choose on demand. ;) Criteria to Consider When Choosing a Non-toxic Moisturizer Beyond choosing body oil vs. body butter, it’s essential to understand what’s in your non-toxic moisturizer + how it’s made. You want to feel confident you’re providing clean + nourishing moisture to your skin – not harmful chemicals or toxins. A clean, organic moisturizer is key – always do your research. To save you some time, these standards are non-negotiables in our book for a non-toxic moisturizer.  High-quality Carrier Oil/Base A non-toxic moisturizer – whether body oil, body butter, or lotion – should contain oils that have been ethically + responsibly sourced. And it’s not just for sustainability reasons. By default, ethical ingredients are usually also clean + free from unnecessary additives. You’ll also want to make sure the ingredients are all organic or at least mostly organic. And it may take some extra research, but you want to be sure the oils you’re applying to your skin have not been chemically altered during purification or processing. Always opt for cold-pressed and non-chemically-filtered (or processed) oils in your non-toxic moisturizer. Lastly, you want to choose an organic moisturizer with non-comedogenic ingredients. This means they won’t clog your pores. This is typically more of an issue with the face, but better safe than sorry. (Speaking of – coconut oil gets a bad rep for being pore-clogging. But fractionated coconut oil is perfectly fine for your face + body and coconut oil found in soaps.) No “Fragrance” or “Parfum” Listed in the Ingredients Scents are one of the most powerful forms of nostalgia. So if you’re itching for a scent that takes you back to memories of the beach, a trip to Greece, or gentle summers spent outside, you’re not alone.  But “Fragrance” (also labeled as “parfum”) is a classic greenwashing marketing term used to hide chemicals + toxins in products. The FDA doesn’t require companies to disclose what’s in their “fragrance” because it’s considered proprietary info.  This means fragrance is potentially one of the most dangerous ingredients in conventional moisturizing products. But you can still have a wonderfully aromatic moisturizer – just be sure that the label clearly states the origin of the scents. The easiest way to do so is by choosing products only scented with essential oils. Avoid Toxins + Irritants We talk about which ingredients to avoid in skincare all the time – and that includes what you put on your body. But here’s a refresher on what to avoid if you’re looking for a non-toxic moisturizer:  Alcohols that dry the skin out (ironic to have these in a moisturizing product, right?). Preservatives and fillers – like parabens, sulfates, and silicones that strip and provide your skin and the formula zero value. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can cause hormonal imbalances. Phthalates that make fragrance “stick on your skin” but are actually chemical plasticizers known to cause birth defects, respiratory issues, and infertility – no thanks.  Tip: Check out this full list of ingredients to avoid in moisturizing products. Stick these criteria in your back pocket – or just shop our non-toxic moisturizer options and know you’re making a clean choice. ;) Other Ways to Support Hydrated Skin  While applying topical moisture is definitely important, hydration isn’t just skin deep. Hydration and the moisture that follows are dependent on your lifestyle choices too.  Here are a few quick tips for maintaining hydrated, supple, and youthful skin – from head to toe. Dry brush regularly – removes dead cells (aka dry skin) and stimulates cell turnover for supple, soft skin. It also helps your non-toxic moisturizer absorb more deeply into the skin. Sweat More – believe it or not, sweat actually lubricates/moisturizes the skin. Internal hydration – don’t underestimate the power of hydration to soften skin and retain moisture. Gel water is an excellent addition to your diet to hydrate more effectively. Moisturizing baths – we’ve created a special Epsom salt blend containing coconut milk for a decadent, moisturizing bath – any time you’d like.  Avoid caffeine and alcohol – these cause the skin to dry out and counteract hydration in your body. Avoid sugars – especially processed sugars that can cause glycation, aka premature aging (which is essentially dry skin).  If any of these tips sound familiar, that’s because they are. Taking care of the skin all over your body includes many of the same basic principles for taking care of + hydrating (and healing!) the face. Hydration isn’t only about using a non-toxic moisturizer – though that doesn’t hurt. ;) Non-toxic Moisturizer: Which Will You Choose?  Now that you’ve learned the difference, it’s easy to see why there’s no one-size-fits-all when choosing a non-toxic moisturizer. But that’s a good thing! And lucky for you, we’ve got a variety of non-toxic moisturizers to fit your preferences + specific skin needs. Soak in the deep, restorative moisture from body butter after time in the sun or while experiencing a particularly stubborn dry spell with your skin. Or your body oil could be the perfect lightweight consistency for a quick pick-me-up in the mornings before starting your day.  No matter your skin’s hydration needs, now you know how to choose the best non-toxic moisturizer for your skin + support hydrated skin that lasts.  Hydration is where it’s at, babe.  Healthy skin = hydrated and moisturized skin. 3 Ways To Nourish Your Skin + Body After Baby

This mama of two beautiful girls, a toddler and a sweet, chunky 5 month old, is no stranger to the funkiness of postpartum skin. It’s one of those things that isn’t really talked about much, but most of us mamas are dealing with it on the daily. Afterall, you have this brand new, incredible body that grew a human from scratch and most likely, it’s quite different than your “pre-baby” bod (and skin). Though it can be all to easy to sulk in the postpartum challenges, I love to encourage mamas to work toward celebrating these changes and find new, healthy ways to create balance inside and out! There are so many changes that happen within your body after baby is born, specifically with your hormones, that can create some new issues that you may not be sure how to approach. Here are a few simple, everyday tips that will help you to balance out your hormones, nourish your body and create glowing skin… from the inside out! NOURISH YOUR BODY This is often a huge oversight for new and even seasoned mamas. You barely have time to shower, let alone whip up a fancy meal! Did you know your energy needs postpartum are actually greater than during pregnancy? Especially if you’re breastfeeding! And that’s not just “calories” my friend, I’m talking about vitamin and minerals, fat and protein and all the water! There are two things to consider here – rebuilding nutrients after pregnancy and meeting the nutritional demands of nursing. They both require a ton of nutrients so it’s important that you’re eating plenty of nutrient-dense, real foods throughout the day as well as including a prenatal and other important supplements. It doesn’t need to be complicated though! Here’s the easiest way to nourish – eat real food! Skip the packaged, processed foods as much as you’re able and choose a vegetable or fruit, clean protein (think wild fish, grass-fed beef, pastured poultry, whole milk yogurt, eggs or soaked beans or legumes if you’re meat-free) and healthy fat (think grass-fed butter or ghee, cold-pressed coconut or olive oils, duck fat, avocado, nuts and seeds) with each meal. This ensures you’ll get a variety of nutrients at each meal and helps keep blood sugar stable – no more “hangry” moments or energy crashes for you mama! Try a quick baked salmon with melted grass-fed butter and a squeeze of fresh lemon over sauteed or steamed veggies and some rice or quinoa that was made over the weekend. Nothing fancy, but it’s all real! NOURISH YOUR SKIN Though it may feel like your skin is playing tricks on you, choosing strong products with synthetic chemical ingredients can lead to further hormonal issues and clog up your system making it even more challenging to clear up skin and get that glow you’re shooting for. Since my second baby, my skincare routine has consisted almost completely of Primally Pure products and my skin has never looked or felt so good. Here are a few of my favorites postpartum: I do the double cleansing method before bed using the Cleansing Oil to remove makeup and impurities then I wash my face with the Goat Milk Baby Bar to complete the process. Once I dry my face, I spritz with the Geranium Complexion Mist and top it all off with the Blue Tansy Beauty Cream or Baby Balm. This mini nighttime spa routine has left my skin super hydrated and my complexion more even than ever! My best recommendation is to find a skincare routine that works for you. It should be simple with a few clean products that really work. Because let’s be honest, we don’t have time for complicated these days! NOURISH YOUR NIPPLES As a breastfeeding mama, this was a glorious discovery for me. I could use the Baby Balm for so many different purposes, but specifically for baby’s bottom and mama’s sore nipples. I started using the balm a few days into nursing my second babe and it was literally life-changing. If you’re a nursing mama you know that is no exaggeration! Apply the Baby Balm liberally directly to your nipples after each feeding session. Let it soak in and don’t worry about wiping it away when baby is ready to nurse again – all the ingredients are safe for baby. How Blue Yarrow Body Oil Helped This Seaside Blogger's Skin Glow

Body oil, a luxurious liquid to hydrate, heal, and nourish the skin. This lovely bottle of goodness has had me floating on air the last few weeks. My skin is glowing and prepared to enjoy a long golden summer. My journey with oils did not begin well. I loved the idea of using pure raw coconut or olive oil on my skin, but every time I did the oil would simply not absorb. It would sit on top and make me feel slippery and well… oily all day long! It stained my clothes and sheets and basically was an incredibly messy experience, one I do not wish to repeat. I came away feeling discouraged, wondering how all my fellow clean beauty friends were making it work. Perhaps my skin just couldn’t handle oils? That must be it, I told myself. Leaving oils behind, I found and tried many different body butters. They absorbed, but it was hard to find a short simple clean ingredient list. I began realizing that I needed ingredients that could maintain hydration long-term—change the texture and health of my skin, not just cover it. Meanwhile, I kept longing for the simplicity of body oils and wishing I could use them. One day I happened upon a discussion over the differences between virgin unrefined coconut oil and fractionated coconut oil. It was incredibly enlightening! To put it simply, the varied fatty chains in virgin coconut oil prevent easy skin absorption. There are the blessed few that can absorb it, but most skin types struggle. I, obviously, fit in the struggling category. Fractionated coconut oil, on the other hand, is created by removing a few of the chains so that only saturated fats remain (medium-chain triglyceride) and though I’m not usually a proponent of heated or altered ingredients, this allows for quick and full absorption. I still encourage you to seek the highest possible quality—at the very least find organically grown. This news changed my perspective and gave me hope! At the same time, I landed on Primally Pure’s lovely online shop, hoping to try out their deodorant (review coming next!). I saw that they carried body oils as well and started perusing the ingredient list. Number one on the list—fractionated organic coconut oil. My heart leaped and I began reading up on the other ingredients. They checked out! From there it was determining which of the beautiful oils to try first. The color of the blue bottle caught my eye, then I saw the main ingredient and knew this was the oil I wanted. Blue yarrow. This incredible plant has been used for centuries to heal numerous conditions, from war wounds, joint stiffness, and eczema to simple cuts and bruises. It also holds many other benefits as well, but we’re focusing on skin today. The other essential oils included were soothing and calming lavender and restoring and revitalizing geranium. Pair these with the rich, plumping, and hydrating oils and you have skin heaven in a bottle. Needless to say, I was sold. Fast forward a month and a half and I am finishing up my second bottle. I know. I’m that obsessed. Believe me it’s with good reason! My skin has never been so calm. I tend to have very very sensitive and dry skin—symptoms of two health conditions I live with daily, Hypothyroidism and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)—so it can become easily irritated and uncomfortable. I’m thrilled to be sharing this product with you today and hope that it brings as much healing and joy to your life as it has mine. Below you will find information on the company behind the oil as well as my personal experience with it. Enjoy! Primally Pure The story behind this small local company is an inspiring one. It actually started with a family’s decision to eat real clean food and start a farm called Primal Pastures. If you’re in the Western portion of the States, I highly recommend perusing their site and even scheduling a farm visit. You’ll be impressed. Back to skincare, one of the family members, a sweet gal named Bethany, wished to clean up her skincare in partnership with her new nourishing diet. Finding little that met her standards, she began to concoct her own products with simple high-quality ingredients. It wasn’t long before she was convinced to sell them on the family farm’s online shop. The raving reviews flowed in and began to build the foundation that made the current company possible. Over the last year or so, she’s gathered a dedicated team around her to expand availability and product options. I could go on for a while about the level of quality in each of Primally Pure’s products, but I’ll save that for each individual review. Basically, they most definitely meet my requirements for nourishing and restorative skincare. For those of you that are new to Merfleur, I define high-quality ingredients as: fresh, non-gmo, natural or raw ingredients, wild or organically grown, created with low-heat, and, hopefully, locally or indigenously sourced. Primally Pure came to my attention through the farm Primal Pastures, but it wasn’t until this year that I decided to invest and give the line a try. I now have quite a few of Bethany’s gorgeous and life-giving concoctions in my possession. As I’ve shared on my Instagram stories, I’ll be continuing to try and test them over the next few months. I plan to only share those that work well for me, so I definitely encourage you to peruse Primally Pure’s shop in case there is something I am not reviewing that may be in line with your personal skin needs. Since Primally Pure’s sourcing and combining of ingredients is so trustworthy, it’s really a matter of effectiveness and personal preference at this point. Product + Primally Pure’s Blue Yarrow Body Oil Experience In the first 2 weeks, my skin needed ALOT of the oil. Hence the 2ish bottles in a month and a half! My skin was transitioning… rebalancing from it’s dehydrated state. Absorbing the oil became easier and quicker for my skin with each day. I can happily say the stagnant oiliness I had experienced with the raw oils did not occur. I have been known to breakout in hives or random bouts of itchiness and neither have taken place. In fact, I think Primally Pure’s body oil has reduced my sensitivity overall. The combination of ingredients in this body oil work to soften and soothe my skin into a place of sweet peace. The aroma. It’s perfectly lovely. I could smell the open bottle all day long, which is odd because I am normally hyper-sensitive and don’t enjoy strong scents that linger too long. The Blue Yarrow body oil provides just the right amount of aroma during application to relax your mind and body. Within 30 minutes, it has soaked in perfectly and left a neutral clean smell on the skin. Uses & How-To + Body Moisturizer 1 pump into palms, rub hands together, and gently massage into one area of the body with light circular motions, continue this method with the rest of your body. Don’t forget to give your cuticles, elbows, and heels some love. Apply post-shower for deepest absorption and/or first thing in the morning, prior to getting dressed. I do both 🙂 + Skin Healer Apply morning and night, spending a little extra time gently massaging more oil into the injured or systemically irritated areas. I recommend wearing cotton clothing after application to allow for breathability as well. + Hair Hydrator Pre or post-shower, after moisturizing your body, lightly run your fingers through lower half of locks, focusing on your ends. You do not need much, simply use what was left over on your hands after covering your body. For a restorative hair mask, use 1/2 to 1 full pump and massage into scalp and locks, tie up in a bun and sleep on it overnight. Shower first thing in the morning. Rosy to Golden Lastly, I have to share a recent experience that made the healing power of this oil very real for me. It started with a weekend camping trip along the coast with friends. My very “light” skin and I had not spent much uncovered time in the sun of late and I was a little nervous about burning. I lathered my body with a new non-nano zinc sunscreen I had been waiting to try (I’m on a new venture to find a safe clean non-nano sunscreen that actually works and doesn’t make you look like a ghost) and spent the day hoping it was doing its job. Well…. evening came and let’s just say my legs no longer looked “white” but had changed hues to a not so lovely rosy red. Yep. My efforts had proven ineffective, at least on the legs, and I was pretty disappointed. Enter my healing blue liquid gold. I went home that night and covered my body in the oil, hoping it might help, but planning to be uncomfortable for a while. Friends, I cannot express how impressed I was with the results! Within a day, yes, one day, my skin was on the mend. By day two, I was golden. My skin remained healthy and happy from that day forward. I’m a huge fan of pure aloe vera, buuuut I may not need it quite as much with this gorgeous rescuer! Story’s conclusion… this oil is beyond a moisturizer, it’s a proven healer. I’m an absolute believer.   xoxo   À votre santé!   For even more PP reviews, plus mindful + seaside living inspiration, take a look at Jessi’s little space over at https://www.merfleur.com.

The Best Non-Toxic Body Wash to Boost Your Skin Health (+ Why You Don't Need Suds)

Body wash should be sudsy, right?  Think again. (Where did this idea come from anyway?) Major corporations and decades of hygiene obsession have trained us to assume that a “clean feeling” can only come from a bubbly, sudsy wash. But what if that “squeaky clean” feeling was actually doing more harm than good for your skin?  Science, history, and time have all shown us: your skin doesn’t need detergents or harsh surfactants to be clean + moisturized. These “washes” may even contribute to your skin troubles. It’s time we flip the script on conventional body washes. We’re going to show you how essential it is to protect your skin microbiome with the right kind of cleanser. Aka an organic, non-toxic body wash. Let the record show: stripping suds are out, and nourishing, non-toxic body wash is in. ;) How Your Skin Plays a Critical Role in Full-Body Health Okay, we’ve introduced the concept that conventional body washes aren’t actually good for your skin. But before diving into the benefits of a non-toxic body wash, let’s discuss why your skin is so important for radiant health. Your skin plays a key role in your overall health + well-being. It’s the largest organ of your body, so how you treat your skin matters.  Your skin:1 Is part of your immune system Provides natural sun protection  Keeps germs + pathogens out Produces sweat to detox + regulate body temperature2,3 And with such a big job, your skin needs extra special care and attention. It constantly absorbs what you put on it, as well as the things in the environment around it. The products you use have a real impact on your entire body – starting with your skin’s microbiome.  Your Skin’s Microbiome Your skin contains a delicate microbiome that depends on a healthy balance to thrive. And like gut health, a variety of microbes and bacteria are essential. Stripping soaps + detergents don’t support this balance. Conventional body washes are sort of like the “antibiotics” of body care. It’s similar to what happens in your gut with a dose of antibiotics. Conventional body washes wipe out microbes and bacteria instead of bringing harmony to the skin’s microbiome. This puts you at higher risk for irritation and skin-related complications. Not to mention illnesses from the long list of toxic ingredients in most body washes.  That’s one of the biggest reasons we’re passionate about living a non-toxic lifestyle – starting with skincare products. Ingredients are too important to overlook. Toxic Ingredients in Conventional Body Wash Though there’s more awareness around toxins and the need for “cleaner” products, there’s also more deception and sketchy marketing than ever before. So, we want to empower you with the truth about body wash. Let’s talk about what’s inside a typical bottle of body wash from your favorite section at Target or Sephora (yes, even the “clean” section!). Unfortunately, many companies are not transparent about their ingredients… or just don’t care. Here are just a few examples of ingredients you might find in a conventional body wash (that you definitely want to avoid):  Sulfates – what creates the “suds” in soap – but can irritate the skin + contain dangerous carcinogenic compounds. Phthalates – plasticizer chemicals that are linked to hormone imbalances and other health concerns. Fragrances – a major loophole for companies, “fragrances” can contain thousands of chemicals – all for the sake of protecting “proprietary information” about their formula. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) compounds – these boost the absorption of other ingredients but are known to cause endocrine disruption + contain carcinogens. These ingredients, and more, strip the skin and compromise the protective barrier your skin needs for optimal health. Sadly, many of these ingredients are even linked to the development of breast cancer in women.4  Toxic chemicals like these make your skin sensitive and more likely to experience eczema, psoriasis, acne, or irritation. No wonder we have an epidemic of skin-related issues! When it comes to cleansing your skin, we believe gentle is key – that’s why you’re going to love our non-toxic body wash. Paradigm Shift: From Toxic Suds to Creamy Lather It might feel weird to think about ditching your sudsy body wash. But by now, you know a bit about why suds aren’t the answer when it comes to cleansing. We’ve been conditioned to believe that suds equal cleanliness. But let’s dive into why the switch to a non-toxic body wash is a whole new (+ healthier) cleansing experience for you – and your skin. ;) → Let’s paint the picture: have you ever felt like your skin was very tight – almost shiny – after washing in the shower? Begging for lotion?  This is NOT normal (or rather, it shouldn’t be normal). It’s a classic example of your skin’s natural oils stripped away by sudsy soap. Of course, hygiene is important – it has its place. But your skin doesn’t need to be stripped by a foamy soap loaded with surfactants and harsh detergents to be *truly* clean.  Look, we understand – we’ve been in your shoes. The transition to a natural product can feel challenging at times. Natural products and ingredients can create a different experience than what you’re used to – especially in a textile way. It may *feel* like it’s not working if it’s not foaming/lathering, but it’s just because it’s not what you’re accustomed to. Instead of stripping ingredients, cleansing should involve gentle + effective ingredients that remove debris and keep the skin barrier intact. Your cleansing routine should restore moisture and help keep things balanced. Another way to think of it: If you’re familiar with oil cleansing, it’s a similar concept. Your skin needs oil to stay balanced + healthy! A balanced skin microbiome supported by a non-toxic body wash creates healthier skin. And healthy skin can: Absorb nutrients and moisture more effectively Keep out environmental toxins + pathogens Support whole-body health – and confidence ;) At Primally Pure, we like to go back to our roots and consider our ancestors’ way of life. And in this case, ancestral wisdom confirms our stance on cleansing. The first cultures to bathe didn’t cleanse with suds at all. Bathing first used oils on the skin that were applied + scraped off. They inherently knew that the skin would benefit from cleansing, but they should leave the necessary oils intact.5 Admittedly, switching to a non-toxic body wash with a different consistency can be a transition if you’re strictly used to a high-suds feel. But we know you’re going to love our non-toxic body wash. Not only for its skin-supportive properties but also its luxurious creamy lather + heavenly scent selections. Let’s break down our (very transparent ;)) ingredient list + all the benefits of our non-toxic body wash. → A note about our bar soaps:  We’d be remiss not to mention that our cleansing bars do have suds to them. It’s a fair point, so let’s clear the air. The sudsy component in our cleansing bars is a result of the saponification process necessary to make a solid bar of soap.  We use skin-supportive oils to make our soaps instead of chemical-laden oils and fragrances. (So of course, they're safe to use on your body if you find yourself in a pinch!)  Everything You Need to Know About Our Non-Toxic Body Wash  Like our whole line of holistic and non-toxic products, we do things differently. We utilize only nature’s purest + most potent ingredients. This means every experience with your Primally Pure products leaves your skin feeling fresh, soft, and balanced. Ingredients are the most essential component of a well-crafted product. So, let’s break down the ones you’ll find in our non-toxic body wash line. Pillar Ingredients in Our Non-Toxic Body Wash Our line of non-toxic body washes includes only the best for your precious skin. We handpicked ingredients loaded with nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, and beneficial fatty acids. They cleanse, strengthen, and rebuild your skin – all while respecting your skin’s delicate ecosystem. (Yes please!) Here’s what you can find in a bottle of our non-toxic body wash:  Coconut Oil  This powerful oil contains lauric acid, medium-chain fatty acids, and antimicrobial compounds that protect your skin from bacteria, lock in moisture, and help heal any irritations. Full of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits, coconut oil supports your healthiest skin yet.  Aloe Vera Juice Aloe is a great source of antioxidants and supports hyaluronic acid production for glowing skin. Its healing properties help repair skin, decrease inflammation, and moisturize. Shea Butter This nutrient-dense ingredient is packed with fatty acids and anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, tons of vitamins to soothe + seriously soften your skin. Wild-Harvested + Organic Essential Oils We only use clean, safe, and transparent scents in our products. Cleaner ingredients + efficiency at its finest. ;)  → How to Enhance Your Experience As with all personal care products, we believe this should be a time to focus on YOU. Regenerative Farming Is Deeply Healing For Our Planet + Our Bodies: Here's Why

It’s no secret our planet is hurting from the careless and rushed habits we’ve developed as a result of technology, convenience, and “cost-effective” mass production.  It may be convenient, but is it really cost-effective?  Truth be told, there’s a much bigger cost. It comes at the cost of not only our planet’s health but also OUR health. The lack of respect for our earth – and the soil that sustains our food sources – has created a cascade of negative repercussions.  Our soil is sick. As a result, our foods are less nutritious than ever before. And it ultimately shows up in our health – and even in the flavors on our plate.  Uncovering this truth can feel depressing. And overwhelming.  But there’s a major solution to bring the profound renewal and healing our planet needs. The best part: it lies in a really simple concept that could drastically change the future of our planet (and our health). It’s called regenerative agriculture, or regenerative farming.  At Primally Pure, we have a passion for reconnecting soil and skin and the values of ancestral wisdom + simpler living. So it felt necessary to shed some light on this beneficial way of producing + consuming that’s in line with our beliefs.  We had the pleasure of interviewing our friend + advocate for regenerative farming practices, Paul Greive. With years of experience and passion under his belt and leading a movement through the company Pasturebird, he had some fascinating things to share with us about his viewpoint + journey that’ll leave you pondering the origins of your food (even organic).  But first, let’s introduce regenerative farming + how it’s different.  What Is Regenerative Farming?  As Paul helpfully pointed out, regenerative farming isn’t some out-of-reach notion. The concept is simple. When it comes down to it, it’s about returning to our ancestral/indigenous roots and leaving the earth better than we found it.  But to understand what this looks like, let’s zoom out for a moment and look at the big picture. How Regenerative Farming Is Different From “Normal” Farming Today, most “farming” includes monocrops or large plots of single crops. This method of farming goes against nature’s design. Nature has an integral, natural interaction between various plants, animals, and the soil. They need each other, and they’re more healthy in coexistence. We thought Paul would be the perfect person to hash this out better. Here’s how he defines regenerative agriculture: “For me, it’s really simple: did you leave the land better than you found it?  Is the soil healthier? Is there more biodiversity? Does the soil hold more water? Does it produce more? Those are the key biomarkers. But really, regenerative farming is just what they used to call ‘good farming.’ You’re leaving it better.” Essentially, it’s farming the “old-fashioned” way, without shortcuts. This is precisely why most farms don’t run this way anymore. It’s more work, and it takes time to heal “sick” soil before you can grow crops.  Returning to ancestral wisdom, regenerative farming involves patient practices like: Letting animals rotate and graze (which naturally fertilizes + aerates the soil) Not using fungicides, pesticides, or herbicides (keeping produce clean) Letting plants + weeds grow (to support a diverse ecosystem) Minimal tillage of the soil (which destroys microorganisms needed for carbon storage) Farming increases soil biodiversity in this way. Similar to gut health, soil needs a healthy and diverse microbiome. It also increases the soil’s carbon-carrying capacity and decreases greenhouse emissions. There’s also an essential distinction between sustainable and regenerative farming. Sustainable farming is more commonly known. But sustainable farming just “maintains” the land. Regenerative farming actually heals and “regenerates” the land. Though sustainability is noble + valuable, regenerative agriculture is the only answer to truly begin healing our planet + the ground beneath our feet. We shouldn’t be “sustaining” a broken system. One of the biggest direct benefits of regenerative farming for humans is the nutrient-dense food it produces. Regeneratively grown food is much higher in essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins than anything you’ll find at the grocery store – even organic.  This may feel out of reach if you’ve never seen regenerative food at your local grocery. But Paul Greive is making strides to create accessible regenerative food through the brand Pasturebird. You’ll definitely want to hear his story.  Regenerative Farming Q&A With Paul Greive From Pasturebird With years of experience in regenerative farming, we wanted to learn more about his background and how he got involved. His journey, perspective, and insight were invaluable. (Thanks, Paul, for letting us pick your brain!) Q: How did you get into regenerative agriculture? A: I was a city kid with no interest in food and farming. When I was in the Marine Corps, I was in the backwoods of Virginia in sniper command school, and I got Lyme disease. I started getting some brain fog, fatigue, and arthritis – some weird things for a 22-year-old kid. Pretty much, I was recommended to go on a paleo diet.  I just felt like a kid again, and it was the first time I ever thought about how the food you put in your body affects the way you feel and perform. And then I just got really interested in the food system in general, started buying better quality food, and really ran into this road block. We could find organic produce and grass-fed, grass-finished beef. But for the life of us, we couldn’t find pasture-raised chicken. And we decided on a whim to order some birds for our backyard out in Temecula. It was meant to be a family hobby, kind of a joke, and the rest was history.  Q: Why, in your opinion, is regenerative farming “worth the wait” or extra effort most farmers/producers aren’t comfortable with?  A: It’s funny. For Americans, it’s not a fast process, right? But it’s pretty remarkable what you can do in a 3-5 year period that to us seems like a lifetime, but to indigenous cultures (and a lot of people around the world), that’s literally the blink of an eye. There’s a lot of dynamics at play. I think there are three main parts: Nutrient density – People don’t understand that an apple isn't an apple and an orange isn’t actually an orange. There was a study done almost ten years ago that said the vitamin A level in an orange today is 90% less than it was in the 1950s. You’d have to eat ten oranges to get the same amount of vitamins as you did eating one back in the day. And it still looks like an orange.  In fact, it probably looks even better than it did back in the day. It’s got the wax on it, the pesticides – so it looks very beautiful and perfect. It’s very appealing to the eye and the brain. But it’s an empty food. And that goes for what you put on your skin too, obviously, it’s the same exact thing.  Ecology and stewardship of land – I feel like we’re called to take care of the land and what God’s given us. The modern idea of agriculture is all about extraction. So it’s about “What can I get from the land?” And at the end of my career, it’s all about how much money I put in the bank – it’s not about what I’m leaving for the next generation with soil health.  A big part of inheritance in indigenous cultures was the health of the land you passed on. But we just don’t think about that at all anymore. 40% of American farms are leased land. It’s not even people who own the land. So, how can you really care about stewarding the land and making sure you’re passing on good soil if you know you’re giving it back? You’re just leasing it anyway.  It’s more fun – If you walk on any conventional farm – chicken, corn, carrots, kale – it doesn’t matter what it is, it’s a little depressing. On the chicken side, you’ll see 25,000 birds all walking on top of each other. They live, eat, sleep, and poop in the same place. You have hundreds of thousands of pounds of manure where they live.  And then you go on to a corn field, and it’s just thousands of acres of one plant over and over and over with no wildlife, trees, or anything. The rain comes down and the soil washes away. Off-season is thousands of acres of barren dirt. And if you think about the places where they grow it, these are places buffalo used to roam. There were beautiful trees, savannahs, butterflies, wildlife, and so much life. And we’ve just stripped it all away to grow corn and soybeans? To me, it’s just depressing.  When you walk on a regenerative farm, the energy just feels so good. The animals are stoked, things are green, vibrant, and lush, things taste good, smell good, and it looks good. Regenerative land is so beautiful. There’s nowhere else I’d rather hang out.  Q: Since regenerative agriculture focuses on soil health, how does regenerative farming actually “heal” the soil?  A: “Organic matter” is a good measure for how healthy your soil is. Organic matter includes roots, animal manure, decomposed leaves, and anything other than just “dirt.” The difference between dirt and soil is organic matter. The higher the organic matter, the healthier the soil. For reference, 8% organic matter is insanely healthy soil, whereas 0.1% is basically dead dirt.  In terms of actually healing it, three critical factors improve soil health:  Animal movement – It’s not just animals. It’s animals moving and giving the land enough rest time to actually benefit from manure.  Cover cropping – Healthy ecosystems always have what we call “armor” on the soil. There’s always something living on the soil. It’s never just bare. Any time you see bare soil, usually that’s a sign that it’s not regenerative at all. It’s like when you get a cut, and it starts to scab over. That’s what the earth is always trying to do – cover bare soil. Bare soil isn’t natural at all. Crop rotation/biodiversity – In nature, there are no monocrops. But when you have grasses, weeds, clovers, and different plants growing throughout the year, that’s a really resilient system compared to one crop grown for 500 acres, and if you get a pest or something happens, it can wipe out the entire crop.” Q: Once you’ve “healed” the soil, do you have to do anything to maintain it (aside from animal grazing/rotating), or does nature just take over?  A: I’ve met very few farmers who would say, “Oh yeah, I’m fully regenerated now.” You could kind of always keep improving. I assume at some point academically you’d get to where the goal truly is sustainability. We talk so much about sustainable agriculture, but the problem is you don’t want to sustain a broken system. Sustainability is not a good goal.  Like if your skin is jacked up, you don’t want to sustain it at that point. You want to be regenerating and then get to where it’s healthy. And THEN you sustain. But I know guys who have been hardcore regenerative for 30-40 years and are still seeing gains every year.  It’s largely going to be the same process. You’re still going to move your animals around, you’re going to have great yields, and have a really resilient system that handles a lot of rain or really dry years. It’s going to handle a lot of natural stuff that gets thrown at you. You’re going to handle it a lot better once your land is really, really healthy.  Q: How have you seen the difference in nutrient density and flavor of produce from regenerative farming firsthand?  A: I’ve had guys show me beef or different vegetables that come off land, which is 8-9% organic matter, and you literally taste the difference. It is crazy how rich in nutrient density it is. And it comes through in flavor, at the end of the day. If you eat an apple or strawberry from ultra-nutrient-dense land, you’ll immediately know the difference. It will look different, it will taste different, and it will nourish your body in a totally different way, too.  Q: What’s one interesting fact you’ve learned about regenerative farming that surprised you? A: Every time you can increase your organic matter by 1%, (which, by the way, is really doable), you raise the water holding capacity (how much water can be stored in the soil) up by 25,000 gallons per acre. Every time you raise it 1%. In farming, it’s actually not about how much rain you get, it’s about how much water you can keep.  It’s remarkable. When you go from 1, 2 to 3% on 30 acres, now, you’re storing 1.5 million gallons of water more than you would have previously. And that’s just 30 acres.  Water is the fundamental key to all life. To be able to keep more water is everything. In modern industrial  farming, water hits the ground and doesn’t absorb much, so it’s fully saturated and runs off. Runoff also carries soil, losing topsoil (between that and wind). Topsoil is how you grow food.  Q: What’s a good first step to supporting regeneratively farmed products if they love the idea but feel overwhelmed getting started? A: The biggest fallacy is that you have to go from zero to everything perfect. Any kind of effort – buy one regenerative item per month just to start. Go to your farmer’s market and get to know some local farmers there. Any kind of effort is moving you in the right direction.  I think we can all get really bogged down in trying to do everything perfectly or thinking, “Oh, now everything I buy has to be regenerative.” It’s not realistic or feasible. But similar to how we say food is medicine, then farmers are your doctors.  How much effort do you put into the place you bring your kids for a check-up or even just an oil change for your car?  You’re going to read some reviews and do some research. It’s okay to immerse yourself a little bit in some of that. Find a few farms you trust, and then go support them with whatever you can. It doesn’t have to be every single meal. Buy one whole regenerative chicken per month, and you’re literally moving the needle that way.  Number two is education and getting a passion for it. I highly recommend people check out a few documentaries. Kiss the Ground does a great job of encapsulating what’s possible and giving a vision. And once you have a vision, everything else kind of falls into place. Food Inc. (even though it’s old) is really good at showing how bad it is, and it has a good message of regenerative farming at the end. So I think that can help people get on the right track, too.  We’re so thankful that Paul was willing to share some of his story with us. Hopefully, it puts into perspective just how important – yet also attainable regenerative farming can be. Speaking of, we’re excited to be investing in regenerative practices ourselves. How We’re Practicing Regenerative Farming at Primally Pure As a holistic skincare company using natural ingredients from the earth + ethically raised animals, we feel it’s our responsibility to be good stewards of the resources we incorporate in our products. In every way possible.  We’ve been working behind the scenes for a few years on our very own plot of regenerative farmland. Our founder, Bethany, first started making skincare using tallow from Primal Pastures. So, to come full circle and partner with them to regeneratively grow + produce some of our own ingredients is a moment we’re deeply proud of.  As promised, our vision + goal is to embrace the concept of soil-to-skin even more fully as we step into our calling. Growing some of our own regenerative ingredients is a huge step forward because:  We can be involved in the full life-cycle of our products. We’ll have even more control over the quality of our ingredients – and the potency of your results. ;) We’re starting with olive oil and perennial herbs like white sage, rosemary, mint, and lavender. Adventure awaits and we can’t wait to share this with you! The Beginnings of a Healthier Planet Decades of mass-production farming have ruined much of our soil and its ability to support a healthy environment + ecosystem. That’s why we can’t stop at sustainability. We need to do more – and we can do more. For the earth (and obviously, your skin. ;)) Regenerative farming goes a step further to restore + heal the root problem. We’re excited to be stepping into some regenerative farming practices ourselves + play a part in reviving a rich, resilient, and beautiful ecosystem.  Just as nature intended. 7 Easy Ways To Repurpose Empty Skincare Containers

If you’ve been stocking up on Primally Pure products, you may have a few empty bottles and jars laying around. In honor of Earth Day, we’re sharing the best ways to repurpose your empty skincare containers! Keep scrolling for 7 easy, creative and inexpensive ways to recycle, reuse + repurpose your PP packaging. KITCHEN CONTAINERS Swap out plastic bags or tupperware by repurposing your PP jars! Our Sea Soak and Flower Bath jars make the perfect easy-to-pack, plastic-free, to-go food containers – and most mornings our team members show up to the office with their breakfast in a bath salts jar. 🙂 Whether it’s chia pudding, overnight oats, a green smoothie, your morning snack or a quinoa salad, these spill-free jars make the most convenient (and kind of cute!) containers for any meal on the go. Plus these bigger jars are the best (and most sustainable) way to store leftovers in the fridge, display loose leaf tea and store any other bulk kitchen items! These jars have literally taken over my kitchen cabinets – and all I have to do is take more baths to stock up on kitchen storage. Sounds like a win-win to me! PLANT A SUCCULENT If you’re a Flower Bath or Body Butter lover (like us), you might have a few empty larger jars lying around. Our body butter and bath salts jars are the perfect size for planting small succulents, little cacti and herb gardens! You can never have too many plants – it’s just not possible. Plants help to purify the air in your home and office space. Plus, surrounding yourself with life-giving greenery has been proven to improve mood and memory, reduce stress and fatigue, and enhance overall well-being. You no longer have to feel guilty about your body butter addiction, it’s helping you plant a garden. 😉 Tip: Since there’s no drainage hole in the bottom of our jars, just be sure to be mindful of how much water you’re giving your plant! I’ve personally had a little cactus living in an 8 oz. Body Butter jar for a couple of years and it’s still going strong.   ALL THINGS FLORAL Like we mentioned planting succulents above, there’s more plant goodness that can happen with your empty skincare containers. Save Body Oil or Baby Oil bottles and repurpose them as a small vase for dried flowers to add a touch of nature to your decor or gift a friend with a mini bouquet in a mist bottle. If you’re into propagating your plants, these also make the perfect place to start growing a whole new addition to your plant fam! You can also use mist and spray bottles to mix up some plant juice to keep your leafy greens + flowers thriving with a blend of pure water + essential oils to keep bugs away and your plant babies healthy. STORE SUPPLEMENTS While we do our best to care for our skin with non-toxic products, nutrient-dense foods and quality beauty sleep, sometimes life throws us curve balls and we’re not always as consistent with our skincare routine + healthy lifestyle as we’d like to be. That’s why we love adding in skin-loving supplements into our day-to-day. But sometimes when you’re on the road or running through your day you can forget to take them. Enter: your empty skincare containers! Save your Skin-Specific Mask and Beauty Cream jars for an easy way to store your supplements! You can fit at least a few days’ worth of supplements (depending on how many you take on the daily) into each little jar – plus they conveniently fit in your bag or carry-on. TRAVEL-SIZED This is one our team loves to implement – especially when it comes to traveling. While we offer TSA-approved sizes, be sure to save these smaller jars and bottles to refill with your larger products to take on the plane or pack in the car. It’s earth-friendly (and budget-friendly!) by buying the bigger product sizes then simply refilling your empty 1 oz. or 2 oz. packaging. DIY BEAUTY PRODUCTS Get tousled beach waves + texture while recycling empty PP spray + mist bottles. After your skin soaks in all of the beauty benefits from our Complexion Mists and Everything Spray (or your seasonal Room Spray and Palo Santo Aromatherapy Mist), keep your empty bottles to make your own DIY beauty products! One of our favs is making a sea salt spray: Fill your empty bottles with warm water and 1 tablespoon of epsom salts then shake until the salt dissolves. Once the water has cooled, add 1 teaspoon of organic jojoba oil to lightly hydrate your hair and 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel (but remember to steer clear of the chemical-filled green aloe products). Finish with a few drops of your favorite essential oils – we love lemongrass for a fresh, just off the beach scent. For more DIY beauty ideas, check out this post! ORGANIZE LITERALLY ANYTHING We had to finish with this one because there are countless options to repurpose your empty skincare containers that we haven’t mentioned! We encourage you to get creative and have fun with your PP empties. 🙂 From office supplies like paper clips + tacks to toiletries like q-tips + bobby pins and kitchen items like loose leaf teas and leftovers, you can organize and store literally anything in our Body Butter, Beauty Cream and Skin-Specific Mask jars. With all of our different jar + bottle sizes, you’re bound to find one that can store all your necessities. Throw one in your purse to avoid digging into the abyss of your bag for a bobby pin, place one on your desk to help you feel more organized, keep one in your car cup holder to keep all your PP Lip Balms (anyone else addicted?!) and keep your kitchen cabinets + counters stocked. Repurposing your PP empties can help you stay more organized and prepared in case of an office or beauty emergency. 😉 How have you reused, recycled or repurposed your PP packaging? We’d love to add your ideas to our list, so leave us a comment below!

Our Founder's Favorite Pregnancy Skincare Products

Throughout both of my pregnancies, I got asked the same question over and over again: which PP product is your favorite to use while pregnant? And since I don’t have just one, writing a post on my top products to use while pregnant seemed fitting. Another question that we as a company get asked often is, “Is safe to use while pregnant?” Here’s our answer: while there are certainly concerns surrounding the exaggerated use of certain essential oils during pregnancy and breastfeeding, we believe the essential oils used in our products and the dilution rates at which these essential oils are combined with their corresponding carrier oils make all of our products safe choices to use on your skin throughout pregnancy (with the exception of our Fancy Face Serum for which we offer a pregnancy safe version). But if you’re unsure or iffy about an ingredient for any reason, it’s always a good idea to consult with your health practitioner before use. Here are some of my favorite pregnancy skincare products! BABY BALM My absolute favorite product that I swear by during pregnancy and beyond is our Baby Balm. It’s incredibly effective at preventing stretch marks on growing bellies, and has kept my belly stretch mark free throughout both pregnancies (eating plenty of healthy fats and drinking bone broth or taking collagen peptides also plays a huge role in this). Baby Balm contains Emu Oil and Marshmallow Root which deeply moisturize and lubricate the skin – it also makes an amazing, deeply nourishing eye cream! SEA SOAK Another one of my top pregnancy products is our Sea Soak, which contains precious salts, seaweeds and clays to relax sore muscles and provide the skin and body with vital minerals. It’s the perfect way to unwind and squeeze a bit of self-care into your day which is so necessary for all of us – especially during pregnancy! BEAUTY CREAMS + BODY BUTTERS Our Beauty Creams and Body Butters are also go-to’s for me while pregnant. One thing I’ve experienced with both pregnancies is dry skin everywhere – on my legs, my hands, face…literally everywhere. Both of these products work wonders in deeply nourishing the skin and preventing + correcting dryness. DRY SHAMPOO Lastly, our Dry Shampoo has been hugely helpful for me while pregnant. Since I need more sleep than normal right now, showers are often the first thing to get cut from my schedule. And as a result, most days I’m either wearing a hat or have a pound of dry shampoo in my hair. I hope this has been helpful! I know everyone’s skincare needs are so different especially during pregnancy. But this is what’s working well for me at the moment – thanks so much for reading!

How Stress Affects The Skin: 5 Tips To Lower Stress, Balance Hormones + Boost Skin Health

Reality is, stress is always going to happen — it’s just a fact of life. There’s no magic wand to wave the stress away! But the better reality is that you can absolutely guard yourself and navigate those stressful seasons with grace and vibrance. If you are anything like me, you have experienced the effects of stress… and wow aren’t they fun? Frazzled, overwhelmed, exhausted and skin breakouts you just want to hide from. The difficult part of how our skin reacts to stress is that it affects us both physically and emotionally. When our skin flares up or breaks out, we can get down and negative on ourselves, and that negativity just adds to the stress load. The cycle continues. How Stress Affects The Skin Hang with me on the science for a moment! I want you to understand how your body works so that you can best serve your body. Meet the adrenal system. Your adrenals are two little walnut-sized glands that sit on top of your kidneys and the definition of ‘small but mighty.’ Your adrenals are your body’s stress response team, think of firefighters rushing to the scene. The job of your adrenals is to cope with incoming stress, handle it and survive. Your body is beautifully designed to handle stress, but NOT the chronic stress we are seeing in modern times! ^^ See the problem right there? Chronic stress! Stress isn’t always a negative thing — stress is simply any change in the status quo. So yes, checking the news too much can be just as stressful on the body as going on a tropical vacation. Or… having our regular routines and rituals interrupted by current events is also greatly stressful, whether or not you realize that in the moment. Enter adrenal fatigue. Have you ever gone too long without charging your phone? What happens? It shuts off, right. Just like your phone signals you when it needs to be plugged into the charger, your body does the same thing. Those symptoms? Your body’s brilliant way of asking for help. When the body’s stress activation response is constantly triggered, our adrenal system eventually says, “Hey! I’ve had enough.” Your adrenal system is simply unable to meet the perpetual demands of stress. You might experience fatigue, weight gain, lightheadedness, hair loss and/or skin issues. Stress + your skin. When the adrenal response is activated and the body goes into ‘fight or flight’ (stress) mode, cortisol and insulin spikes! This, in turn, tells the sebaceous glands (skin glands that create oils) to produce more oil, typically an overproduction that leads to an increase in oils, an increase in bacteria in your pores, breakouts, deep and painful acne spots and blemishes. Many conventional acne solutions don’t actually address the root cause which is a hormone imbalance – and often, conventional acne solutions even make the issue worse. Using harsh topical solutions that strip your skin of its natural oils, only causes the skin to produce more oils and again the acne cycle continues. This is why we always want to get to the root cause first and focus on healing the underlying factors, not just the symptoms! 5 Ways to Stress Less and Support Healthy Skin Cultivate an evening wind-down ritual: With adrenal fatigue, your cortisol (“I’m awake hormone”) and melatonin (“I’m sleepy hormone”) get confused. Often you can be exhausted in the morning and wired at night. Not so fun, right? Cultivating an evening wind-down ritual signals your body that it is getting ready to sleep. Even if you aren’t tired, you want to send your body this message! Pro tip: Just get into bed early – even if you don’t fall asleep, this helps your wind-down… and even better, leave your phone in the bathroom away from reach!   Increase your intake of healthy fats: Many of the hormones the adrenal glands produce are steroid hormones which are fat-soluble hormones made from cholesterol. When the body is in a weakened state, increasing healthy dietary fats provides our steroid hormones with the building blocks they need. My favorite healthy fats: grass-fed butter and ghee, coconut oil and coconut butter, avocados, tahini, pumpkin seeds, macadamia nuts, walnuts and fresh fish.   Set aside intentional time for self-care: Taking care of your self is never a selfish act, in fact, it allows you to love and serve others to the best of your ability. Taking care of yourself is also your safety net of health, vibrance and longevity. Self-care rituals intentionally take your body out of “hustle and go stress mode” and into “rest and relax” mode. This allows your adrenal hormones to rejuvenate and heal – sort of like plugging your phone into the charger. Even if it’s only for 10 minutes, make self-care a priority. You will gain this time back and more as your energy, productivity and patience increase! My favorite self-care hack for busy days: Getting into my PJs early, even before helping my sweet daughter into hers.   Find a skincare routine that helps you in this season: There is nothing worse than being frustrated with your own skin right? Frustration, negativity and self-doubt are all forms of stress which will only weaken your energy and stress out your skin even more. I adore the Clarifying Serum and Clarifying Mask! These have saved my skin during stressful seasons and breakouts. Anti-inflammatory ingredients like colloidal silver and turmeric help your skin and, in turn, your body decrease inflammation and calm the stress response!   Stop Multi-Tasking: Unless you are multi-tasking while masking like I always do (yes I’ve been known to make dinner while wearing my Clarifying Mask!), multi-tasking increases stress in your brain and body. Multi-tasking should really be called task switching and it can create confusion and feelings of overwhelm and even panic. And it also greatly decreases productivity because your brain is constantly having to play catch up. Instead, make a simple and attainable to-do list. Complete one project in entirety before tackling the next. I promise you’ll thank me later!
