Do you struggle with wanting more? Achieving more? Needing more?
Are you caught up in the comparison trap? Others have it…you want it too. New car. New house. New furniture. Vacations. Cleaning ladies. Considerate husbands. Well behaved kids. Savings in the bank. Cute hair. Nice eyebrows. Skinny/curvy/muscular body. Nice nails. Clean house. Laundry done. Thriving plants. Updated kitchen. Pool membership.
Are you ever satisfied with the goals that you complete? What I mean is this…you have a goal. You complete or accomplish that goal. And, rather than taking time to sit back and take a breath….you are onto the next item on your to-do list.
Do ALL the things say to you…
I know exactly what you are going through. There was a season in my life when everyone around me seemed to be talking about their fancy vacations, cleaning ladies, decorators and private school selection. And I totally and completely bought into that mind set. I WANTED ALL OF THAT TOO. It got so bad that I kept asking my husband when we were going to have more money…over and over and over.
Now, while I was living in that season of my life I had NO idea that my mindset was wrong, I had no idea that I was headed for a path of destruction. Mentally, emotionally and physically. My husband and I fought. My kids were no longer my joy. I was easily frustrated, irritated and angry.
I saw things and I wanted those things…and they were not arriving fast enough in my life. All I saw was what I did not have. What I thought I craved and desperately needed. And, looking back, I was completely miserable.
Fast forward. We moved out of the neighborhood where I was miserable. We then lost ALL of our money in the stock market and ended up living in rental houses and apartments. And, I was trying to settle into a life of nothing, or so I thought. No money = no things = no life.
The all consuming, all loving, all changing Jesus. I was invited to North Point Church by a friend. My very first Sunday changed my life. Completely. Totally. Forever.
God does NOT want me to be caught up in what the world has to say about living my life.
Romans 12:2 – ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will
I need not LOVE money.
Hebrews 13:5 – ‘Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'
I could be content.
Philippians 4:11-12 – ‘I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
I can do all things because Jesus gives me the strength that I need.
Philippians 4:13 – ‘I can do all this through him who gives me strength.'
I did not have to do anything alone.
Matthew 11:28-30 – ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.'
I could find all of the answers that I needed in God's word (the Bible).
John 15:5 – I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
God would be my source of truth. And, if I remained close to the words of scripture I would grow and become a person who no longer needed the things of the world.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – ‘All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
I could trust and never be disappointed again.
Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
ALL of the things that I thought I wanted, needed and had to have were masking the cravings within me. I was thirsty and didn't even know it. I was craving real living water. I was craving the truths of God. I was craving Jesus. I was created with the longings of God within me.
John 4:13-14 – ‘Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'
So, rather than living my life within the shifting sands of society, with opinions of others, or what others did…I was able to find out ALL the things that God and Jesus wanted me to know. ALL the things that I could change about me. ALL the things that would make my life better. ALL the things that made me new. ALL of the things that did not shift and move. ALL the truths that would last for all time.
I also learned that once I gave up all of my wants, have to's, gotta haves, anger, irritation, frustration…all the things that I thought were just me…I would be a new person. A new creation. I would literally be born again.
2 Corinthians 5:17 – ‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!'
I am a completely different person. A person who has changed from the inside out. I find life SO. MUCH. EASIER. I no longer have to wonder about certain decisions…I know the truth and that truth has literally set me free. There is so much freedom in my life now. Because I know the boundaries. I no longer have to guess.
I learned that ALL of the good things in life. ALL of the attitudes of my heart come from God.
Galatians 5:22- The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
